Seeking Cozumel Advice

Hi experienced cruisers,

Has anyone explored Cozumel on their own when your cruise ship was at port?

. We are not really tour people, and since we already have a full day tour booked at another port, we would like Cozumel to be more laid back and "do your own thing." . I have found some ideas online, but was hoping someone that knows the city could offer a plan.

One person in our group has some mobility issues, so we can't walk everywhere, which is what we would normally do. I thought about renting a car or jeep for the day and exploring that way. Any thoughts on that?

Our interests include nice beaches and places to have a drink on the beach, shopping and good places to eat. Any special sites of interest would be neat, too.

Thank you!

Can back from there on Sat. You might search Cozumel on the Mexico site here.

Go to Fodors.com, Mexico and search for TC's Cozumel list and you'll find a wealth of info.

Mobility issues: trouble walking, crutches, senior citizen, wheelchair?????? Don't forget you're dealing with sand so question may be difficult to answer without knowing the issue.

Weather was about 75 but water was colder if you want to dive or snorkel.

Thank you, jan47ete. We will be there in late April. Good to know about the water temp-- might be too chilly for us to snorkel. The mobility issues are mostly back related and not being able to walk too far without pain. We can take taxis or rent a car. Did you use Mexican currency there or did they also accept U.S. money?

Most use $ or peso and give the exchange rate. We did go to the municipal market and pesos were needed.

I have to disagree about the water being too cold to snorkel. I've been there three times in December, twice in March and once in April and the water was absolutely perfect every time. I don't like cold water at all and I would not have gone in if it were cold.

They do accept US$ but you will save money by using pesos. If you were going to be there several days then I would recommend getting pesos. If you are only there for the day and you are not going to spend much then it might not be worth your trouble to exchange.

Thanks,P_M-- Do you have any favorite places to suggest, such as beach bars/restaurants?

Jayne, I wish I could make some suggestions but my DH is a big fan of all inclusive resorts so we always have our meals and drinks at the hotels. Sorry.

Great web site Jan47ete.

There are several beach clubs in Cozumel, some all inclusive, some costly, etc. just look up Cozumel Beach clubs. Mr Sanchos gets good reviews, but it is costly and I have not been there.

We went to Paradise Beach club two years ago from a cruise. It was fabulous! The pool is beautiful and is right next to the bar/restaurant. There are lots of inflatables in the water. It was March and the water temperature and weather was great.
Cost then was $3.00 pp and you were supposed to buy $10.00 in food. Food was good - hamburgers, fries, etc. Friends had drinks and thought they were good. Baths and changing rooms at that time were spotless. Noticed one recent review that was not quite as good, so you might want to look at that, but other current reviews are great.

The beach was really nice, but we all enjoyed the lovely pool as much as the ocean.

If I remember correctly, paths from the parking area were all paved. I know they were all around the pool, restaurant and changing room/bath rooms.

We took a taxi from the port. It was about $40-$50.00. Don't remember if that was round trip or not, but we had 5 adults and 2 children so needed a van.

Overall, cheap for 7 of us. A very relaxing day. I would definitely go there again!

Thank you everyone. That temperature site is awesome. If it could inch up a couple of degrees by late April, that would be good.

Paradise Club sounds nice, and I will look into the others-- I guess that is kind of what Money Bar is, but free admission. Any tips on taking a taxi? Do I need to know Spanish? I can learn a few words but if they speak back to me I cannot understand! arrgh

Oh, one more thing, I search for TC's Cozumel list but was unable to find it. I found lots of people asking him to send it, but never the actual list.

Money bar and Paradise look very different to me.
The beach at Money bar is man-made and contained by a wall. It has steps down to the water. To the sides of the wall, the beach area is rocky. I do not believe Money bar has a pool. It is busier and has more cruisers, but reviews say the food is great.
Snorkeling is also rated good there, but with currents.

The beach at Paradise is sand where you can walk into the water from a nice beach and the area with chairs is huge. I didn't go far out, so don't know about currents. The pool is beautiful if that is important to you. I thought the food was very good.

Pictures can show you the differences.

Cozumel is one of our favorite ports because of the reefs and deserted beaches on the East coast, also called the other side of Cozumel. If your looking for some great snorkeling and nicest calm beach in Cozumel, I would have to recommend Punta Sur Park.

We took a private jeep tour with http://cozumelcruiseexcursions.net and one of the stops that were included was Punta Sur Park. We have done other Cozumel excursions and never liked The Who caravan tours, where we had to share a vehicle and they never did the things we really wanted to do. We found the custom private tour and we were able to create our own adventure in Cozumel.

If your looking to do something on your own in. Cozumel, this is a great option. You get a private guide and nice jeep. Our jeep had AC, and they even throw in a cooler of beer and water which is really cool. They have a custom itinerary itinerary of the best of Cozumel, and it was basically the inline with what we wanted to do in Cozumel. If your looking to do the best things in Cozumel, I believe that this is your best option. We went snorkeling at a private beach club, ventured Punta Sur Park which was lots of fun. The beach here is the nicest calm beach in Cozumel, and was perfect for our kids because the water was very shallow and there were not waves. The East side of the island has amazing beach and ocean front. We made a couple stops, which were at a blowhole and some really amazing rock formations, and the one had a little cave. Some of the sights are a little hidden, and a little difficult to find if your on your own in Cozumel. Our guide was very entertaining, and a local to Cozumel so he knew all of the best sights. We had a really nice lunch at a beach club on the east coast of Cozumel and was also included. For what you spend on a rental, its worth doing the private tour because of the costs just to get into the attractions, which are included.

Another place to check out would be the money bar where you can snorkel. There is no beach, but does have some great snorkeling. Its very close to the private beach club we snorkeled at with the private tour.

But no matter what you choose to do in Cozumel, you should have a great time because there are so many amazing things to do in Cozumel.

We're 4 seniors and would most like a beach that's low-key (not especially family-friendly) with some gentle snorkeling, loungers and shade, and a few amenities.
Going to Punta Sur Park and maybe one other stop for lunch with cozumelcruiseexcursions sounds great.
Do you know if they do shorter private jeep tours? Not sure whether we'd last for more than 3-4 hours.
Thanks.
