Thanks for the quick reply, qwovadis. We will flying in so an airport shuttle would also be nice.
We stayed at the Best Western 7 Seas at the "Hotel Circle". There are lots of hotels there and they all offer free shuttle to/from airport and the cruise port.
There is a nice mall by the hotel, only 3 to 5 blocks. We walked there within 15 to 20 minutes.
The hotel also offer free shuttle to Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo. Last trip, we stayed a few days, went to the museums at the Balboa park before cruising. Just prebook at the front desk and tip the driver.
We stayed there 2 years ago, Hotel is a bit "dated" and in need of renovation. For the price, location, convenience and service, we will stay there again.
By the way, the cost of cab fare from the crusie port to the airport was less than $10.
Thanks, Eschew, I'll check it out.
We just did a Holland America cruise to Hawaii this past Feb./March and stayed pre-cruise and post-cruise in San Diego. We stayed at the Sheraton Marina hotel which is directly across the street from the airport. We got a fantastic price through SW airlines when we booked our air so decided to stay there. It was a lovely hotel, nice harbor views, etc. The cruise port is about 10 min. drive from there so you could easily get a cab. We had booked a 4 hr. city tour through Gray Line tours on the day we were boarding the ship. We checked out of the hotel, stored our luggage in their holding area, and went on our tour. We asked the bus driver if it was possible to drop us off at the port and he was happy to do so. We just made a quick stop at the Sheraton to pick up our luggage. We did give him a nice tip as we figured we would have had to pay for a cab.
I know that the Holiday Inns offer free shuttle service to airport and the port. There is a Holiday Inn right across the street from the port also but I don't know if I would attempt to cross that busy boulevard.
If you are not going to be doing any sightseeing, then I would suggest the Holiday Inns.

We spent 2 days post cruise in San Diego and stayed at Holiday Inn Express Old Town. The hotel picked us up at the cruise port, free shuttle to San Diego Zoo, and free shuttle to airport on our flights home.
Thanks, I'll check out the Holiday Inn. I've spent quite a bit of time in San Diego, so sightseeing will not be on my agenda....just flying in the night before and want a convenient place.
There are lots of hotel right at the cruise ship terminals. Many are walking distance. Free shuttle wouldn't be an issue as cab fare is only $10 from airport to the docks.
The Dana on Mission Bay has special cruise packages that let you park your car for up to 10 days for free. They also have a free shuttle to the cruise terminal.
My cruise isn't until the end of January so I have time to decide... and my traveling companion has walking issues so we will need transportation from the airport and to the port. Taxis are definitely an option since they are relatively inexpensive but I just thought it would be handy to have a shuttle service.
We are flying in the night prior to embarkation, will have dinner that night with family and then go to the port the next day.
Thanks again to all of your suggestions....
