We will be on the Paul Gaugin from in Tahiti Dec 22-29 and wanted to find out about renting a car on Moorea. Europcar offers three pickup points - the airport, Haapiti and Vaiare. Does the car company pick you up as we don't know where the ship will be anchored and does it cost any more, and are there other companies that rent cars? Thank you for your help in this matter.

It all depends where your ship will anchor and tender you ashore. You can call your cruise line and ask. It would be either Vaiare, Cook's Bay or Opunohu Bay.
Avis was at the local airport. The airport is a local airport in Moorea. There is only 1 road around the whole island, 35 Km in all (about 22 miles) and are labled by Km. (their equivalence of the mile post) and that's it.
Unless you are staying on the island for a few days, I wouldn't worry about renting a car. Try the public transportation called "Le Truck". It runs around the island and has stops at all major attractions and the ferry terminal.
PG is no longer with Regent.
It docks at Opunohu Bay.
If you book with Sandrine at Avispacificar she will bring the car to the tender dock.
We rented from her last year ( our 6th trip on the PG 5 of which were when it was with Regent) and she had the car for us.
We drove up to the Belvedere and then to Temae Beach and the Sofitel where we had lunch. We went to a few shops which we liked over the years. As another poster said it is very easy to drive around the island.
