Is there enough to see in Cabo or has anyone rented a car and driven to San Jose for shopping and lunch?
Is there anything special about car rentals in Mexico, insurance, etc?

You might want to hire a taxi for the day. It's easier and probably safer than renting a car. Agree on the price before you get in. We haven't been there for many years, but in the past we always preferred staying in Cabo San Jose rather than San Lucas. It's more Mexican and intimate, not that you find old Mexico in Cabo. Not like Mazatlan which existed long before tourists came, Cabo developed as tourist destination, so locals there are migrants from inland. You'll find good seafood, but won't find classical hot Mexican dishes with sauces. That's not the coastal Mexicans eat.
