RCCL Legend of the Seas
Cruising on Legend in Mid-Oct and would like any feed back on the condition of the ship. Has anyone sailed on her lately? Has anyone tried the "any time" dining?
Will be arriving from Rome to ship on the train. I understand it is very simple and less expensive.

I suggest posting your request on cruisecritic's message boards. The people there are cruise-obsessed (me included) and talk about every detail of cruising. (It's actually called "my time dining" and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of posts on that topic alone.)

I cruised on the Legend in June out of Rome. The ship is older, but is in good shape. Little things I noticed in my cabin were wear and tear on the furniture and carpeting....the balcony had some rust and corroded areas. The decor is a little dated, the color scheme of the cabin was peach and aqua, if that gives you an idea...the bathroom was also pretty dated, but everything worked properly. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice ship, it's just not flashy and new like some of the other RCCL ships.
We did the my-time dining as well and liked it. We had a set time each night that I asked for the first night of the cruise. We sat at different tables most of the nights, sometimes we were with new people, sometimes we had dined with them before. They want you to either call each morning to tell them what time you'd like to dine that night, or have a pre-reserved time. Calling each morning might be tough, because I seem to recall the time window was something like 9:00-11:00am, which was when you were in port on excursions.
We also took the train from Rome to Civitavecchia and it is easy. Once you exit the train, there is a 15 minute walk to the port entrance. You walk along the waterfront towards the port entrance and once you go through the gates, you have to find the bus to take you back to the Legend. Once you go through the entrance gate at the port, look down the road a bit, on the left and you may see busses waiting there (large, Greyhound-type), if not, you need to wait near the grassy median that is there. There wasn't a sign or any respresentative from the cruise line to let us know where to wait, and we didn't see any busses for a few minutes, so it was a little confusing.

I want to start my review on a positive note. The ship was clean and well kept. The crew was professional and very friendly and helpful. The entertainment was very good, and the Legend of the Seas singers and dancers were awesome. The Legend of the Seas singers and dancers put on some spectacular shows. The best part of the cruise.
The reason for my poor experience and the reason I cannot recommend the cruise is the Windjammer Cafe Buffet. We suffered with pancakes that made noise when they hit your plate, with scrambled eggs so loose they were swimming in water, and spare ribs so dried out and over cooked that they literally broke my dental bridge.
I didn't know whom to report to when I discovered that the dried out meat had broken my bridge so I didn't say anything until I was asked to fill out a mid-cruise survey. The only response I got from customer service was that I didn't report it at the time of the incident and I never showed my broken bridge to any of the crew. They didn't believe me!! They might just as well have called me a liar to my face! I don't think that is how you treat a 3 time customer who is retired with plenty of time to do more cruises. I decided to write my story in a review on the RCCL web site. RCCL pulled my review and refused to print it and suggested I contact customer service. I was provided with an email link and sent my story to customer service again. That was over a week ago, and I am still waiting to hear from RCCL.

You're posting on a thread from 2009 to complain that you broke a dental bridge on a cruise?
I lost a veneer eating a wonton in a Chinese restauant. It would never occur to me in a million years to hold the restaurant responsible.

I am amazed you are that interested.
It was on a lower front tooth that had gradually darkened after a root canal so a veneer was applied. In the restaurant, the veneer and part of the tooth broke off. I attributed it to age of veneer (maybe 20 years) and weakness of tooth.

Life is full of interesting things ... and yours is a much better "tell" than the broken dental bridge on a dry rib, or a dry piece of meat.
With all the food on the buffet and you put a piece of dry meat on your plate accidentally, and I can't see anyone putting a piece of shoe leather like dry meat on their plate in purpose, you wouldn't put it in your month and eat it any way.
It would have been a better story if the dental bridge broke from eating a yogurt.
