I will be in the Port of Marseilles for one day in July and would like to visit one of the local towns and just stroll, drink some coffee in a picturesque setting and go through shops and take photos.
From previous travels, I have done museums, art galleries and churches. I have been reading about Aix en Provence, Les Baux and Avignon. Does anyone know if these (or any other town) would offer these simple requests?
I am grateful for any help or suggestions.

My husband and I were on the Windsurf last year and went to Aix en Provence for the day. It was a bus ride to get there, but was certainly worth it.There is plenty to do. There is history, quaint little streets, wonderful local shops,and beauty everywhere.We were even swept up in a local wedding with a bride right off the cover of Vogue. You cannot go wrong there. Some of our best photos are from there!!
Hi Parislady - I will be on the Splendour of the Seas in a few weeks and would love to go to Aix en Provence. Any tips on finding and taking a bus there?
When we were in Marseille, we went to Avignon - Palace of the Popes and some stuff dating from the 1400s. A bit touristy but interesting. Can take the train there (TGV fast one or regular slower ones). The biggest challenge in Marseille is getting to the train station - cost about 20E by cab and was a little ways away (maybe 20 min.) No easy public transportation to the train or bus station. The port of Marseille is huge, and cruise ships dock fairly far out.
Most people liked Aix, although we didn't go there. One person said "it's just a town - no big deal" but most people seem pretty positive about it. It sounds like your kind of place, since you're not looking for any grand entertainment.
Les Baux is reachable by bus, I think, but I've thrown out info on just how to get there.
Very close to Marseilles is Cassis, a perfect little port surrounded by restaurants for people watching.There, you can take a boat ride to see the Calanques (fjords). Something different and a wonderful day. Enjoy!
We just returned from a ship cruise and went on a day excursion to Aix-en-Provence when we docked in Marseilles. The town was small and had its charm, but 6 hours there was a bit long. Maybe because it was on a Sunday and the shops were closed. The most exciting thing in town that day was their nice flea market. Lisey
