Philadelphia

Because of the re-routing of ships from NY to Philadelphia, my 10/16 Silversea sailing will be spending not one night but two in Philadelphia. Now, I've done the Liberty Bell/museum route before and would like suggestions of fun things to do there. Funky restaurants, unique shopping and such. Any ideas anyone? (I'm SOOO disappointed...my TWO favorite artists, Ray Davies of the Kinks and Rod Stewart BOTH have separate concerts there 10 days later!)

And, also, where the heck do ships dock in Phili???

I can tell you Dralion of Corque De Soleil will be in town at that time. Tell me what days you are going to be in town and I'll try to help. I work in Radio in Philadelphia and probably can find you any of the "Cool" spots. Also general age would help, so I can recommend things in your field of interest.

Great! I'll look that up on Pollstar. I'm going to be there the nights of the 16th and 17th of October. I'm 44 and my husband is 47 but we're highly immature. A fun bar (classic rock would be ideal) that's not exceedingly loud and not all 22 year olds would be a nice addition to any itinerary. Oh! Oh! Oh! And my husband went to The Restaurant School in the mid-70s and at that time, they had a restaurant that was run by its students. Would you happen to know if that's still in operation? Thanks a zil.

Hi Judy, Im in my late 30's so we probably have similiar interests. I would suggest ear plugs for any rock bar you visit. I have worked in music all my life and for some reason Philly bars think loud is good (I find them loud). I will see what's hot for concerts and the like and get back to you. If you like jazz, Zanzibar Blue is always cool. South Street is always interesting with pleanty of unique restaraunts on Second and South. I would suggest staying away from the Mega clubs on Delaware Ave. They are primarily of a young and immature nature, but if you feel adventurous they can be pretty wild. If that peaks your interest let me know and I'll tell you which one's can be really steamy.

Judy,
I believe the Restaurant School is still here. If you want a real special treat and a BIG blow to your wallet, eat at LeBecFin. Actually their lunch is great and won't break the bank.

If you like Chinese food I'd suggest the Buddhakahn restaurant! Excellent!

Would the Ben Franklin Institute be of interest to you? If you want hardcore shopping you could catch a shuttle up to King of Prussia. How about Tea at the Ritz? Hmm City Hall is beautiful, Betsy Ross House, etc all those historic sites are pretty cool. Have fun!

philly.com or I think there is also phillymagazine.com might have some info for you

Thanks to everyone who's responded! You planned my entire two days, people! And there I was, thinking the highlight might be standing on line at Pat's for a cheese steak for an hour!

I don't want to say anything bad about Pat's but try somewhere else as well. They have a conveyor belt way of doing things. Some of the better places are actually out of the way little places. By the way if you were looking for one of the wilder clubs Shampoo is always interesting. Have fun in Philly. And when someone almost runs you over, it's in our nature. We really aren't mean, hehe.

Thanks for the suggestion AND the warning, Greg, but I'm a New York City girl and if I haven't been hit by a yellow taxi or a motorbike messenger by now, I think I can handle it! But I'll definitely keep my eyes open! Only two more weeks...will I make it??!!!

judy,

In response to your question 'where does the ship dock', we met friends for dinner who were on Silver Whisper last Monday (in Philadelphia). Your ship will dock at 500 S. Broad St., Naval Ship Yard facility. Our friends claimed taxis could not enter this facility (due to security). However, Silversea had a shuttle available during the day and early evening for passengers (located at the end of the gangway). Most museums are closed in Philadelphia on Mondays. You may enjoy a visit to the Reading Terminal Market...think operating hours are 9am to 6pm.
My subjective opinion is that the Restaurant School (which now has a new location) is not nearly as wonderful as it was in the '70's.
Have a wonderful vacation!

Thanks so much, Elaine!! That was the big mystery and just last night my husband said, "I know there's a naval yard but I can't see a cruise ship swinging in there." See! He's wrong...again! And interesting comment about The Restaurant School. We probably will visit one of their restaurants because my husband's class was the first one to open an actual working restaurant so he's interested in going back. But, to tell you the truth, the people he's called there sound clueless! Thanks again!
