We are landing in NYC from a cruise and I dread having to fly back to Boston.. Any ideas which airlines are the most lenient weight wise... or...would we be better coming back by Amtrack or renting a car....

Gee ,sorry ParrotMOM, I cannot answer about he lenient airline in New York.

C'mon you New Yorkers, help this lady out !
If it were me, I would also look at convenience, rather than just worrying about paying $50 baggage fee. If I read correctly, you are flying into NYC, not crusing. JFK or LGA? JetBlue has $50 flights NYC-BOS and they let you take one 50 pound bag per person for free, and then $50 for each additional bag. Other airlines charge for any bag - and flights are about $25-$50 more. The convenience factor also works at the Boston end - where in Boston area are you going and how will you get there. Who wants to ruin a nice vacation hauling luggage thru all sorts of terminals.
If you really brought too many shoes on the cruise or bought too much stuff while you were away, Amtrak lets you take 3 50-pound bags per person for free. But then you have to get into Penn Station and out of South Station (or Westwood) when you get home.
Another thought is that since most planes flying that route are smaller regional jets, they are often fairly strict about carryon size and number - so you can't cheat it that way.
