Pay in full or Cancel???

Soon it will be time to pay in full for our February Seabourn cruise to Vietnam. My wife says she will not go that far away from home if we are at war with Iraq. My question now becomes should I pay in full and risk losing 25-100% of the fare or should I just cancel now and get my deposit back?

We do have trip insurance but I do not think it covers cancelling at the last minute because we don't want to go (as opposed to being sick when it would pay).

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

If your wife doesn't want to go, you should either reschedule or cancel. You will lose your trip insurance if you cancel, but maybe get to roll it over if you reschedule.

I would cancel. It is not worth the worry. Maybe this year take a trip closer to home and take the Vietnam trip when the world is a little more peaceful.

Check with the insurance company - Access America will let you transfer the insurance money to another booking.

Hi David,

A war with Iraq should not be a problem unless your ship is meandering up the Persian Gulf. Quite a distance away.

What is the rest of your itinerary?

Paul

Check your full policy carefully - we saw one recently that included a partial refund if US Dept of State issued a specific travel warning to that particular country (it was policy of neighbor traveling in 2 months - sorry, don't know name of company.)

There are 2 factors - the actual risk of traveling to a place (which is difficult to predict or measure) and the emotional distress one would feel traveling - if the second is too high, difficult to imagine having a good time - and this distress is, of course, not always grounded in statistics since we are all human!

Take a friend........that is really silly to stay home. The world is never going to be a perfect place.

If it were me:

Honestly I think it would be perfectly safe to go on the trip. You would be safer there than in the US. If your wife is set in her decision not to go if we are at war, I would cancel. Even if it works out and we are not at war, you will have spent several anxious months not knowing if everything would work out.

Paul-

Two years ago we were scheduled to go on Song of Flower. She wanted to cancel one week before the cruise because of problems in Indonesia (cruise was from Bali to Singapore). We wound up going and she loved every minute of it! One port was cancelled because there had been a bombing there. But we did get to Bourabodor which was fabulous.

As if it hasn't bad enough already, today's New York times healine is : SOUTHEAST ASIA REMAINS FERTILE FOR AL QAEDA. It says that now Al Qaeda is "turning to so-called soft targets, like resorts."
