Optional Tours-Danube River Cruise with Viking

We are going on a Viking River Cruise of the Danube River from Nuremberg to Budapest in August. I was wondering what optional tours travellers particularly enjoyed and felt worthwhile. For example, the optional tour in Regensburg includes a ferry-boat ride to Kelheim to see the Danube narrows. Was this trip worthwhile? Does it make for a really busy trip to try and do all tours?

We did an optional tour from Regensburg to the Danube gorge, beautiful scenery, visited the abbey and their brewery. Altogether a really good afternoon tour.

We are looking at taking this same cruise in September (although it may be Budapest to Nuremberg, haven't decided yet). How did you like the cruise cas64? Do you have any tips you can share with me?

Hi Terry,

If you go to the www.cruisecritic.com website you will find dedicated posts for River Cruising. Lots and lots of great info there you can read. We have done 1 river cruise and loved every minute of it. I got lots of great info on Cruise Critic River cruise boards. We did Danube Nuremberg to Vienna. Nuremberg has so much history and it's well worth taking the Nuremberg Museum excursion. It was so moving and we learned a lot visiting here. They give you headsets and you can take your time going thru the museum. The headsets are a must as the exhibits are in German (unless things have changed).

I did this same itinerary for the Christmas markets right after Thanksgiving, so some of the tours offered in the off-season aren't going to be offered in the summer or early fall.

But I took an optional tour to the BMW plant in Regensberg and loved it. You got right onto the plant floor. I also did the optional concert in Vienna and had a great night.

There were some other optional tours, but I didn't do them (a visit to the Thurn & Taxis palace in Regensberg, for instance). And there was a visit to Godollo Palace in Budapest.

But the optional tours do change occasionally and seasonally, so you could have other options we didn't have.

A large group of passengers went ashore in Passau and rented a minibus to visit Salzburg for the day (a 2-hour trip). They all reported that they had a great time. But this wasn't offered by the ship ... it was a tour they organized themselves.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and tips. I will do some more research from your input. I'm really excited to go on this cruise!
