News. CCL to add 2 new mega-liners.
I copied and pasted this from another crusie site. Some may like this while I am sure others will find it revolting. In any case its coming. BTW just to give you an idea of how big these cruise ships are these days bear in mind a WW II Iowa calss battelship with all that armor weighed in at a mere 50K tons and was close to 900 ft. long.
Carnival Cruise Lines Names New 130,000-ton SuperLiners Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic
MIAMI (Carnival Cruise Lines) – "Carnival Dream" and "Carnival Magic" are the names Carnival Cruise Lines has chosen for its two 130,000-ton SuperLiners scheduled to enter service in October 2009 and June 2011, respectively.
Representing a new class of vessel for the line, the 3,652-passenger "Fun Ships" will be the largest in Carnival Cruise Lines' fleet and offer a host of innovative on-board amenities and facilities.
"Carnival has earned a reputation as a cruise industry innovator by continually upgrading its product and introducing new and exciting features. Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic will epitomize 'Today's Carnival,' offering the widest variety of dining, activity and entertainment options in our fleet," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president and CEO.
Including Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic, Carnival Cruise Lines has four new ships on order, all of which are being built by Italy's Fincantieri shipyard. The first of these, the 110,000-ton Carnival Freedom, is slated to debut in Europe March 5, 2007; the 112,000-ton Carnival Splendor is scheduled to enter service in July 2008.
These four vessels will join Carnival's current 21-ship fleet which operates voyages ranging from three to 16 days in length to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, New England, Bermuda, Europe and the Greek Isles.

Can you imagine what these ports will look like now? RCI's Freedom alone dumps 4,000 at a time in a port, now Carnival will be doing the same.
Looks like I'll be seeing you on the Tahitian, Larry. The Caribbean is beginning to get way too crowded...

The cruising world sure has changed as you can and have attestd to. I just hope a balance is maintained so those who prefer the smaller, more elegant style of cruising have a decent number of options to choose from. Interstingly I wonder if such huge ships would ever be allowed in places like Tahiti. I seem to get the idea that the powers that be there want to keep it as unspoiled as possible. I mean AFAIK its only smaller ships line the TP or the PG that even go there. What do you think?

Wow.
Four thousand people in one day on one tiny island. Not good.
Disney must be fuming at the pilfering of their favorite word, "magic". With only two ships, Magic and Wonder, it seems more than ironic that Carnival chose Magic and Dream.

Joan, that is ONE ship and on some days there are 9-10 in port.
Larry, I think that Tahiti will preserve itself, as has Bermuda. They will not allow big ships and bigger crowds to ruin it for everyone. For this pristine experience, the lines that cruise there will be able to maintain higher pricing and deliver a truly good product.
I have to say that so many ships/people in port is a real turn off to me. I would rather stay on the ship those days and actually get a pool chair that has not been "saved" for hours on end with nary a person sitting in it.
I have watched Alaska grow to accomodate too many ships as well. Soon, there will be few spots left to actually enjoy.
On our trip to the Caymans this year, we are staying at a hotel closed to ship passengers. And when choosing a resort in Jamaica or the other islands, we do the same.

Seems like a lot of potential confusion with those names.
And, think of the mess when about 4 or 6 of these all try to get into port at the same time. I have a really hard time getting excited about the prospect of all of these big ships.
I was in Norfolk once when one of the Carnival ships pulled up to the dock adjacent to the USS Wisconsin - one of the Iowa Class ships - the Wisconsin looked like a toy ship beside it.

I'd luv to see a battleship up close and personal. One of my hobbies is building scale models of these behemoths from another age. The USS Missouri is in Pearl and I have read there is a section of its siding dented by a Kamakazi that rammed it. But I digress. I am a huge history buff. Hopefully someday we'll see it. We have seen Pearl but hat was B4 the mighty Mo was there.
