We like to try a mini cruise to see how we like it. I am prone to motion sickness so I rather not spend more than 7 days on the sea. I also don't want to go to an area where I might experience hurricanes. I know there are medication and patches that are helpful but I prefer not to reply on medication for a prolong length of time. Our closest experience was the overnight ferry Tallink Siljia from Stockholm to Tallinn and Riga to Stockholm and we liked it alright. We are in NYC and we also have a free Delta domestic companion ticket to be used before August 1 2011. Not much time I know that's why I am asking for advice here. What are the websites I should be looking at? Am I looking at last minute deals? How scenic is Alaska in mid July? We don't care for entertainments, gambling and dancing. We are pretty quiet and we mostly keep to ourselves. We like scenic places, DH does not swim which means the Caribean might not be a good choice. Thanks

You do not need to swim in the Caribbean. You might have a storm, I guess. But the Caribbean is I theink good for a first cruise. The seas are generally calm. The ports are not too challenging. You can pretty much do what you want and if you pick a fairly sedate cruise line like Holland America or Celebrity you should do OK. Alaska is a great cruise, but some of our group did get a bit sick, but I did not. There are a lot of Alaska cruises, but I would do more planning than I would for a Caribbean cruise - many more optrions.

What about a cruise to Bermuda out of NYC - I think there are several lines that do that. Advantage is you get about half the time at sea but you also get to spend several days in Bermuda, using your ship as your hotel.

Lots to do in Bermuda, very civilized and British. Nice shallow beaches. Great public transportation.

My issue is that I have a free companion ticket from Delta for domastic use only that I don't want to waste and it has to be used by end of July. I have to come up with something soon. I guess it does not have to be a cruise.

We cruised from NYC to Bermuda a couple of years ago. A gentle rain in NYC turned into a roaring storm in the open Atlantic. Almost everybody got mal de mer big time. It was the first time I was ever sea sick. It was a bad 24 hours. While this is no guarentee of bad weather, it can get rough in the Atlantic. More protected seas - Caribbean, Alaska are Mediterrean are more predictable.

1st of all try for an amidships cabin and the lower the better as this location is best to diminish motion sensing. Does the Delta domestic pass include Puerto Rico? If so then a cruise out of SJ to the so. Caribbean would be good. There is no sea that is always calm. However usually its fine. As for meds consult your MD. Non-drug treatments for mal de mer include ginger tablets or capsules and a certain type of band to exert pressure on your wrist. Some folks swear by them. Alaska is fantastic though by now it pretty late for July. How about August? There is obviously more time then to plan which can be done. The best part of Alaska are the excursions which can be pricey so be aware of that. There is no need to be a swimmer to go to the Caribbean. While on shore you can sight see. No worries. As for websites look at several for cruise choices such as Yahoo or expedia. However I would book with a TA as you are a cruise newbie. BTW be aware that RCI and Celebrity do not discount off the published fare but you should be able to get an OBC (On Board Credit) for your TA. many people here use www.cruisecompete.com. This site sends your requests to various TA's they use and they literally send offers to you and rather quickly too. Good luck. Larry
