Mediterranean cruise- first week of May?

Hi everyone,

Looking to take a Mediterranean cruise the first week of May 2018 and am looking for some tips. The cruise we are looking at would be leaving from Rome, and would be traveling to Venice, a couple places in Croatia, Greece, Malta, and back to Rome.

My questions are:
1. Is the first week of May an ideal time to go on a Mediterranean cruise?
2. What would the weather be like?
3. What should I (a mid 20's woman) pack?
4. Any other advise?

We would be in Europe for 4 weeks. A day in Rome before the cruise, a 12 day cruise, three days in Rome after the cruise, and then an additional two weeks traveling through Spain and Portugal.

Am looking for advise for the cruise specifically, but would appreciate any advise for the whole trip (especially the packing!), as this is my first trip spanning more than two weeks!

Thanks in advance!!

Here are some answers:

1) Early May is a nice time to visit the Mediterranean - fewer crowds than in mid-summer.

2) To get general weather statistics for your destinations go to www.weatherbase.com. Click you way through to Europe and your various Ports of Call. If you want more detailed info then you find on that website go to www.wunderground.com - type in your Ports of Call in the Search Box then scroll down to the "History & Almanac Section. Put in your planned dates of travel. You'll be directed to chaats showing what actual weather conditions were in each Port of Call for every day in that period for the last 10 years. Study the data and you'll know more about the weather in those locales than most locals.

3) Your cruise line will send you a "cruise packet" (or you can find info on their website) which includes hints on what to wear and what to pack. How much you actually pack depends on your willingness to do laundry (either yourself or have it done for you on the ship) while you are traveling. Conventional wisdom says "Take less clothes, bring more money". DO NOT overpack - For a 4 week trip if you can't fit all you clothes & stuff in one standard size (24" to 25") checked suitcase and one 21" roll-aboard you really don't need it. You'll need casual clothes during the day and what is generally described "Resort Wear" for the evening aboard ship - long pants and shirts with collars for men, simply dresses, skirts & blouse or Pants and blouse for the women. Google "Packing for a cruise" and you'll find lots of useful information and hints.

4) Have fun.

Weather wise as far as heat, you might want to go to Spain and Portugal early May and take the Mediterranean cruise later in the month or into June. Spain can get very hot.

I've been on the Mediterranean several times during the first week of May and it is lovely-- upper 70's with cooling temps early in the am and late in the evenings. Consequently, pack what you would pack for a summer vacation (think casual), BUT do not forget to pack a couple of cardigans, windbreaker, a small pocket umbrella, and some warm scarves. For the casual evening cruise nights I always get away with packing a pair of nice dark slacks to use with a variety of nice blouses.
