Making a flight at Rome airport (FCO), coming from Civitavecchia

My cruise is scheduled to arrive at Civitavecchia at 7AM on a Wednesday and I am on an 11:30AM flight home that day. Holland America says that should be enough time - does anyone have any experience with this?

Flight leaves at 11:30AM ; so you need to be at the airport by 10AM.

The trip takes about 2 hours by train and a little more than 1 hour by car.

You can be ok of you get things moving in the morning although as you can see, you're cutting it close ...

I have found it works well if you let the ship know you need to catch a early flight so you get off in the first wave of folks. Since its close I would try and team up with some others on the ship or simply hire a car less stress and you know you will be there on time.

As someone who has made that run four times, you really only have two options -- ship transfer or private car/taxi. If you flight leaves at 11:30 you absolutely have to there by 10:45. The 45 checkin deadline is pretty firm. By that time of day the Rome can get pretty busy and security line could be long and slow. Is the flight directly to the US or a connecting flight. If it is a connecting flight it will be a little easier because you use the local terminal. If it is an international flight then you have to use the international terminal and that requires a bus ride. I could try to share a car and driver with someone else who needs to be there early. It also helps if you have only carryon luggage. Then you can just walk off when door opens.

The ship can and probably does provide an early morning transfer directly to the airport. That will be a fraction of the cost of a private car service, which is going to cost you the equivalent of about $120 or $130. But I"m totally in agreement with fmpden on the two options being the only ones available to you. If you are two or more people, I'd probably spring for the private transfer; if you are alone, then the bus.

But I disagree with the other posters on the timing. I would not arrive at the airport any later than 9:30 for an international flight. And if you can get there by 9, all the better. You do have more latitude if you are taking a flight to somewhere else in Europe to catch a nonstop back to the U.S., but I would not take the chance of arrive as late as 10.
