Mahahual (Majahual) - Avoiding the crowds

We'll be stopping in Costa Maya on our cruise the week before Christmas. Best I can tell, there will be three big ships in port that day. (Our ship alone will have more than 3000 passengers.) While we plan to check out the village of Majahual, we were thinking that one of the small hotels a bit south of town might be a good place to hang out on the beach and do some snorkeling. Maybe get a day rate on a room for shower, changing, siesta, etc.

Anyone done this? Any recommendations?

There is a beach right next to the port. We usually go there when in Costa Maya. They now have chaises you can rent (Was $5 last time there) and there are trees for shade. Snorkling is pretty good but go under the rope. This is on the right of the pier. On the left there is a swiming pool free for you to use.
I am confused about Majahual. Is this all the shops/chickies at the end of the pier? (Which is SO long, they have a 'bus' to take passengers to the end.)Standing on upper decks on ship all you see are trees around the shops at end of pier. If it is 1/2 mile away, you should be able to see the town from here.
We've never seen more than two ships docked here unless they've built another pier.

Majahual is the little town that's a long walk or short taxi ride from the dock complex. Permanent population 300, but vendors come in on cruise days. (They even set up massage tables on the beach!) Supposed to have good restaurants, beach bars, concessions (less expensive than "official" excursions) and a nice beach. In the next few miles past the town is a long stretch of beach with small hotels (mom & pop, dozen or fewer rooms type of thing).

That's a good description of Majahual. The beach there is nicer than the one at the pier.

Not sure if you can get a day room at one of the inns, but it's worth a try. Probably not out of the question if they have vacancies.

We left the area where ships dock. We spent the day at Majahual. The cab ride is different one way then the other. (??) Not sure about that one! However, the little town is interesting. I had the massage on the table on the beach for $25.00 It was the best massage I ever had. A full hour I think. The beach is very small but all and all a delightful day. A cute little town. It is not built up yet, and that to me although many will disagree, was part of the charm.
