Is this a fair price for a cruise?

For a Western Carib cruise I have been quoted the following prices for July 2001 (cruise only all tazxes and port fees)

Royal Caibbean Voyager
Category DB Ocean View with Balcony: $1725

Princess Grand
Category BC Ocean view with Balcony $1775

Do these seem like decent prices? This is my first cruise... I can't wait until been on it so I will know the answer to all my questions (like what is the difference between a category DB/DA ect......)

Thanks for any advice,
Jules

In July 2001 that same trip brochure rate for BC on the Grand Princess was $2299, and Love Boat Savers Fare (Early booking rate) was $2049, so these fares look pretty good.

You would never pay the brochure rate on any cruise (unless you were really clueless) so I really wouldn't even use that as a comparison.

Seems a little high for booking so early (and I'm assuming it's July 2002) Does that include air and from where? If the price is cruise fare only, maybe you should check other agencys for comparison. P.S. the Voyager is AWESOME !

Julia....I have had much luck with mytravelco.com, going through agent Todd Floyd (1800-777-0707, ext. 82362). He works from noon til nine most days. I look at the web site, find super good deals (Frommers recommends them highly) and then I call Todd. He knows of even more deals. I would expect to pay several hundred $$ less than what you state. (But I also wait until about 4 or 5 months before I want to leave before I book the cruise. Anyway, give him a call for a comparison...and mytravelco.com also gives a price guarantee...if the price goes lower after you book, they will give you the lower price. I am not affiliated with any travel agency, I have just booked several of my cruises through Todd over the past few years. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Thanks everyone who responded!
The price I was quoted was from a travel agent, cruise only and I thought it seemed a little high... that's why I'm asking
Check out the cruise websites first to get an idea what they are going for. My last five cruises were booked thru different agents I found on the web using their sites. I just book with whoever offers the best rate. The rule right now is that you should pay no more than 60% of brochure rate and often it is 40%. I receive several cruise newletters and the Western Caribbean seems to be the lowest as far as price is concerned.

Please watch mytravelco.com I booked a cruise there a couple of years ago and after the cruise was booked and the deposit put down, they started to tack on extra charges. I finally cancelled the cruise with them and booked with another agent and save several hundred more dollars by changeing agents.
Their web site is good for comparison, but their deals aren't that good, especially when they attempt to tack on charges after the deposit is paid.
Check around before you book, you can get a better price.
Patsy

I have found even better prices than the web sites mentioned to be that of AAA or Sam's wholesale. If you belong to either, call them for comparisons.

I just booked a guarantee on a cat BC on the Grand, Eastern Carib mid-September '01, for $850/pp, so that price seems high to me, even allowing for July vs. Sept pricing.

Suggest watching prices a while, and subscribing to some cruise deal email updates.

I've had good luck booking 1-2 months prior to sailing. Have used Cruises Only (I think they're part of mytravelco) three times, with no problems.
