How to get to St. John from St. Thomas port and which beach...

We will be on the HAL Eurodam in late March. One of the ports is St. Thomas, which we've been to many times. I did read a post that we will not dock at Havensight, which we are used to. We thought about an excursion to a beach on St. John. Can we do this on our own? We dock at 8 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m. Please give me details on the ferry and then what we do to get to a nice beach once on St. John.

When our ship docked at Crown Bay, we decided against going to St John (longer taxi ride through town to get to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal in heavy traffic; there are ferries from Charlotte Amalie to St John, but they are infrequent and they take longer to get to St John). Instead, we went to Sapphire Beach so my husband could snorkel there. (For non-snorkelers, there are better swimming beaches.)

If you decide to go to St John anyway, Trunk Bay seems to be the most popular ... we've been twice. I enjoyed it more this time since you can now rent chairs there.

Here's a link to USVI beaches that you'll find useful -- http://www.vinow.com/stthomas/beaches_stt/.

Take a ferry from Charlotte Amalie; look up the schedule online. It's a lovely ride. Taxi to Cinnamon or Trunk bay beach. Enjoy!

You can do it but it won't be cheap. You'll need a taxi to Red Hook to ferry to St. John and then taxi to beach and all the way back. Most likely your ship will have an excursion that will go to St. John beach and that's usually the best way to go.

There are plenty to do in St Thjomas rather than beaches. Have you consider the historic Charlotte Amalie walking tour? And I am not talking about the shops.

Governemnt Hill, Fort Christian, Legislature Building, Emancipation Park, Grand Hotel, Lutheran Church, 99 Steps, Haagensen House Museum and Blackbeard's Castle are great attractions and worthy of a visit.
