Hawaii Excursions.

I am going to Hawaii with Princess in Oct of 07. We will be stopping at Kauai, Lahaina, Honolulu, and Kona. I am interested in snorkling, waterfalls, and volcanoes. Does anyone have any tips? or do you know of any tours, that are reasonably priced? thanks.

This site is informative. It at least will give you ideas for the various island and what there is to see and do. We are doing the Heliopter ride in Kauai. Go see to a Luau. There are many suggestions. You have plenty of time to plan.

Rental cars work just excellent in Hawaii for bargain touring. Especially in Kauai Waimae Canyon is a gem and so are some beaches.

Just an extra tip--In Honolulu you'll be docking at Pier 10, alongside Aloha Tower Marketplace. You can download coupons here: http://alohatower.com/promotions.html

Or pick them up at the Guest Services Kiosk.

I second Roberts--they service all islands so you could easily book with them ahead of time online or at the first port for all subsequent islands.

You will have an "hors d'oeuvres" sampling of beautiful Hawaii on your cruise! Unfortunately, the four islands you are visiting take days to see, so concentrate on your interests! (And I agree with the rec. of Roberts Tours.) You didn't mention whale watching..but at that time of year, Maui is your best bet. And the best for an active volcano is, of course, the Big Island (Hawaii). And a heliocopter ride here would be your best bet. On Kauai, try to check the weather ahead of time before deciding to go to Waimea Canyon. It is really breathtaking, but October can be a bit rainy up there. Enjoy!

I will also be cruising Hawaii in October, but on a different line-NCL, same itinerary. I was wondering if one can hire a car with the driver/tour guide for a day on a pier and go sightseeing. How much that could be?
We used to do it on the islands. But of course, Hawaii may be different.
It'll be four of us and sometimes it may almost be the same as group tour. Are there any 'difficult' roads that we should avoid: winding roads or unclear signs/directions. My fear with rental car is that we may get lost and miss the ship.

How does it work with pickup and dropoff locations? From what I understand rental companies have shuttle that brings you to the airport to pick/dropoff the car. IS that right? HOw long does it usually take? Are there any locations near the port?

In our experience, it varies. We rented a car in Hilo and in Kona and in both places there were vans at the cruise ship docks to shuttle people to the car rental outfits at the airport. If you don't see a van for your company, there are probably phone numbers and telephones off the ship close by. It didn't take long for the whole process of the finding the van, getting a ride to the airport and renting the car - maybe 30 - 45 minutes, I'm guessing.

Our rental in Hilo was a breeze. The problem for us was in Kona where the car rental company we used only had two free shuttles back to the ship, both at inconvenient times. The airport there is some distance away and the traffic was terrible so we wanted to avoid having to pay for a taxi. Therefore, our touring of Kona was cut down considerably. Next time I would ASK what their policy is for return-trip shuttles to the cruise ship.
