HAL Shore Excursions

My husband and I have booked a cruise in October on Holland America to the Mediterranean, leaving from Venice with other stops in Italy, Catania (Sicily), Naples, Civitavecchia (Rome) and Livorno (Florence). We having trouble deciding on booking shore excursions through HAL or going through other companies, i.e. Viator. Any suggestions or first hand experiences would be greatly appreciated.
