No need to worry. On the non formal nights you can still dine in the dining room but if he wears a jacket it doesnt have to be a formal one you are OK in the dining room on formal nights also. Other than that you can dine in the Lido restaurant or have room service. They aren't very strict with the rules - they just don't want muscle shirts etc in the dining room. Carnival is the least formal line so don't worry about it and enjoy the cruise.

YAY, THANKS. I WAS MAIN LY CONCERNED THAT I WAS GOING TO DINE ALONE! YES, HE HAS A LONG SLEEVED SHIRT AND MANY JACKETS. I AM HOPING HE WILL WEAR THEM. IF NOT, HE CAN GET ROOM SERVICE!! THANKS FOR THE REPLYS.

You should better define "he refuses to dress". 
If he is not wearing anything
, he can't get food anywhere except for room service.
There are plenty of food outlets and the only challenge would be formal night in the dining room. I have wear shorts and have no problem.

I usually wear a blazer on the plane and that becomes my Tux on formal nights. However, I sometimes feel overdressed. It is interesting to see what people consider "dressed up". However, if you want you can get room service or go to the Lido. On our last cruise - in July 2010 - the Lido food was as good as the dining room food. Sometimes better. Our ship had an optional restaurant ( NO extra charge) on the Lido deck, and it was good and had a little atmosphere.

On Carnival, even on formal nights, you don't even have to wear a jacket anymore. No one will say anything when you enter the dining room any night. My husband wears dockers and a polo shirt, maybe his tux the 1st formal but not 2nd. I have even seen shorts and jeans on Formal nghts! (We've been on 7 Carnival cruises this year- we are cruise-a-holics!)

When we went on our Princess European cruise (2 couples) the guys said "no dressing up for us". OK, so on the formal nights we went to the buffet and it was fine. Even there they had tablecloths, etc (which they don't do on the other nights.)
Of course we (women) looked OK in black dress pants and nice top...could have gone in the dining room. But I must say that the way some people were dressed was "interesting"...
