Bubba,<BR> Very funny, but that's what they were wearing at an adjacent table last Carnival cruise. We were enjoying the daily "style show". Finally, on formal night, they asked Bubba #2 to remove his backwards baseball cap!! They tell you on your tickets, in your room and on a sign in the dining room that no shorts are permitted.If you can't follow that rule, please eat at the buffet on top deck. You will feel out of place in the dining room in shorts, cutoffs, halter/tube tops.Spare the others.

Complaining about what people wear on a cruise is the same as complaining about all the little darlings running amok, while their parents sit idly by with their head up their bung!<BR>It simply does not do any good to complain about either, so you may as well join them.<BR>On my next cruise formal to me will mean a short sleeved walmart shirt with matching tie, cut off jeans and flip flops.<BR>Bet a hundred dollars the staff would not open their mouth and if they did, just raise hell and they back off.<BR><BR>Dress code really means "just don't show up naked"

Come on, tell me it isn't true! We are going on our first ever Carnival cruise in Septemeber..on the New Legend. The only other truly American ship I have been on before was Crystal Symphony and on the formal nights I have never seen so many beautifully dressed women. Surely on Carnival formal nights it will be Tuxedos for the men and evening wear for the ladies. I just cannot believe that people would turn up in inappropriate clothing.<BR><BR>You are just kidding, aren't you?

Sorry, Iris. They are not kidding. Some men will wear suits, but on Carnival you will NOT see tuxedos. The women will dress up, but many will not bother. Carnival should probably drop their formal nights as a company policy, since nobody follows it anyway. <BR><BR>I agree with you -- it's lovely to play 'dress up' for one or two nights. Unfortunately, on Carnival, you will be in the minority.<BR><BR>That being said -- if you do decide to dress up, just accept that not everyone of the ship will be joining you, but I'm sure everyone will be envious!<BR><BR>I cannot imagine what made you go from Crystal to Carnival???? It's like being used to Neimann Marcus, then dropping in at Walmart. Both are good -- but very, very different experiences.<BR><BR>So, go and enjoy -- but don't compare Carnival to your past experience on Crystal. Apples to oranges.

Jeanette, thanks for the information. At least I will be well prepared. We are going on Carnival because we received a really good offer for this ship's first trip across to USA after being completed in Germany. The ship would seem to be enormous and very well appointed. I have read all the threads in the rec.travel.cruises newsgroup where many people abhor the very idea of stepping on a Carnival ship. We cannot believe it will be that bad and anyway we are open to new experiences. Although we are not really stuffed shirt sort of people we like to dress according to the code. If you tried to come to dinner in your jeans on QE2 I think they would send you away as I have heard they do on P&O.<BR><BR>I am sailing on the Oriana in 10 days for our first trip on P&O so i will report about that cruise.<BR><BR>I am still looking forward to our cruise on Carnival..we vist Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, newfoundland and end up in New York where we stay a week at NY Hilton/Towers..got a great deal on Priceline. I just cannot wait now until I see Bubba in his T shirt and a baseball cap..I simply do not believe that anyone would dine in clothes like that.<BR>We shall see!

We just got off the Carnival Paradise last Sunday. People for the most part dressed beautifully on formal night. I even saw a little girl in a tiara. I did see several tuxedos, but most men wore dark suits. I saw very few people who fit the descriptions of Carnival passengers that are posted here.

I have sailed on just about all Carnival ships and find there are many tuxedos and variations of tuxedos such as those you see on Oscar night. I have also seen many in dark suits or dark sportjackets. Also many in colored sportjackets. I see many men placing their jacket on the back of their chair. There are extremely few in just sport shirts and they do look out of place.<BR><BR>If one does not care to dress appropriately, simply eat in the buffet. When it is posted formal it means formal.
