Dominican Republic - (La Romana) What to do for a day?
Hi,
Our cruise will be in La Romana, Dominican Republic for a day in early March.
What should we do for the day? We do like pretty beaches. I've heard the DR is terribly poor. Should we buy a day pass to an All inclusive resort?
Ideas? Thanks!
Linda

Cute town not too bad usually just hire a driver/guide from
the port head for nice beach markets...
Dreams and Excellence luxurylink.com are nice for AI no need
to pay extra there for me...

Most ships that call in La Romana allow you to use the facilities at Casa de Campo; some require you to pay, some don't. If you aren't going on a luxury ship, then you'll probably have to pay. If you can do that, then that would be my suggestion. There are all sorts of activities at the resort, including horseback riding, golf (expensive but magnificent), shopping, and even a nighttime show. The fee usually includes lunch at one of the marina restaurants or at the shopping village at Casa, which looks like an Italian hill town. The resort itself is sprawling and huge.
The beach at Casa de Campo is not particularly spectacular though it's ok and has been improved lately, but you're not that close to any other beaches; the closest are at Bayahibe, and it could be cheaper to buy a pass at one of the resorts there, but you have to figure in the cost of transportation.
If you want something more lively, you can usually go to Catalina Island on a speedboat. It's a nice trip that normally includes a snorkeling stop and time on a beautiful white-sand beach, as well as lunch and drinks. That one is a good trip.
