Dialysis On Board??
Hi, all:
We are taking the September 8th crossing of the QM2 (westbound) and we're hoping our parent would be able to join us. However, our father requirers dialysis.
According to Cunard, they have the staff to adminster dialysis, but the passenger needs to rent the machinery and have it delivered to the boat.
The costs entailed are not a concern, but it seems like a lot could go wrong. Cunard sounded like they do this often. Anyone have any experience in this area?
Thanks so muhc for any help; it would make a huge difference to our father if he could join us on this important trip.
Thanks!!
Michael

If you're smart you'll get CUNARD, not a bunch of other people, to specify, in writing, that they have the dialysis-experienced personnel to perform this procedure. Past experiences, if there have even been any, are irrelevant to the safety and efficacy of this procedure when it is performed on YOUR relative.

One thing that comes to mind would be to talk to the nursing staff who cares for your father on a regular basis. Maybe they can hook you up with another family who has been down this road before and can offer some first-hand advice. It does sound risky to me, but maybe his healthcare professionals can assure you that other patients do this kind of thing all the time. Or not.
Also, have you posted this at cruisecritic.com - I believe they have a special board for cruisers with disabilities and you might get more insight there, or at least a referral to someone who has been there and done that.
Good luck.
