If I remember correctly, on the 'sun class' ships they convert a portion of the buffet area into an 'alternative' restaurant in the evening called the Sterling Steakhouse or something like that. We didn't try it though. I think the surcharge was $8 per person.
We were on the Sun Princess (sister to Dawn and also has the steakhouse). They took the area outside one deck up from the pool and overlooking the pool and made that into Sterling Steakhouse in the evening.
It was fantastic! It was $8 and I had one of the best steaks I have ever had. I traveled with my mom and she had ahuge filet and I had a rib eye steak. Both were excellent.
We picked a night that we were in dock late and we could see the lights of the city that night.
Would definitely recommend it.
