cruising with 18 and 17 year old
...narrowed down to the Sensation and Sovereign of the Seas. Want this to be fun for 18 year old and her friend. Are they too young for the disco?..they are definetly too old for the kids club. Can anyone help decide which would be a better choice for sailing?..I've looked on cruisecritic but nothing about cruising with 17/18 year olds.

It is a tough age to cruise - at least 18 year old willo have a friend. Too old for teen club, too young for adult activities. Our son was 18 when we cruised with him - he was bored, but is not very outgoing.
Some cruiselines will serve alcohol to 18 year olds while at sea - so be aware of that. I might select based on ports and activites there.
On our recent cruise on celebrity, disco was 18+ after 10 PM - so check out age restrictions on that.

I am not aware of any lines with ships based in the US who serve alcohol to those below 21. Used to be beer and wine on RCI but that changed last summer.
In the discos on RCI and X they card at the door. Under 18 are not allowed and after 10pm only 21 and above are allowed in.

We just cruised Celebrity - rules were if we signed something an 18-20 year old would be served. Our 16 year old dtr who was with us reported that many of the older teens she met had no trouble being served - I have no way of knowing if this was teenage boastfulness or fact.

RCI did change that rule about underage drinking. My son (now 20) has cruised with us a few times and generally is bored as well unless there are shore excursions daily such as snorkeling. He likes the rock climbing wall on RCI and the game room (i.e. pool tables, chess) on the Radiance Class family. We've found that the ships with the video game room doesn't offer enough selection for him. Also, if there is a movie theatre on board that helped to kill the time at sea for him.

When we cruised Royal Caribbean, the parents had to sign something to allow the 18 yo to be served. There were kids onboard whose parents did sign and as a result, their kids too advantage of their new freedom and ran up HUGE bar bills for themselves and their friends.

You could sign a waiver, we did for our son in February 2006. We have since cruised with RCI in Oct.2006 and the policy had changed to 21. The bartenders told us it was because of spring breakers getting out of hand and making things rough on the crew and other passengers.

RCI changed drinking age to 21 in July, 2006 not just because of spring breakers but for more serious reason: after several tragic incidents involving drunk teenagers falling overboard. However, on cruises in regions with not so strict law i.e. Europe, they will let parents of 18-20 y.o. sign a waiver for alcohol.
