Cruises and Ports in Italy, Turkey and Greece

Next Year 3 of us are going on a cruise on a Carnival ship that docks at several ports in Italy, Greece and Turkey. I was wondering if anyone had taken this trip before and could tell me what they enjoyed and didn't enjoy or learned from the trip. Plus the main question- how far is the port from each city center. And how and what the best way it would be to get there.

1.Rome (Civitavecchia)
2.Naples Italy
3.Mariman Turkey
4.Izmir Turkey
5.Istanbul Turkey
6.Athens Greece
7.Katakolon Greece
8.Livorno Italy

If you post this question of the ports of call section at www.cruisecritic.com, you will get lots of information.

Civitavecchia is I believe, about 90 minutes from Rome.

Naples: we used Giovanni from www.tourofitaly.com for a wonderful day along the Amalfi Coast, with stops in Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. Next time I'd want to see the Archeological Museum and Pompeii.

Athens: this was our disembarkation port. We hired Spiros from www.athenstaxi.net to pick us up at the port (about 30 minutes from Athens, as I recall), take us on a half day tour of Athens, and drop us at our hotel.

Okay let me see:
1.Rome: as has been mentioned Rome is over an hour away from the port.

2. Naples. You dock in Naples but what you want to do is take a tour ( drive) down the Amalfi Coast and also see Pompeii.

For Istanbul and Athens the cruise ship docks near by , but better to have a tour guide for these places.

Livorni...for Florence and Pisa... again your best bet is to book a tour guide to pick you up at the ship and take you to Florence( great place) and then on the way back ..stop in Pisa.

Marmaris the port is within the downtown.
Izmir within the city center but the main attraction Ephesus is 48 miles.
Istanbul the port is 1.5 miles from the old town of istanbul with attractions(sultanahmet)

Hi aocain,

I'm thinking of doing taking this same cruise in Oct with my husband and have the same ques as you - how can we do the sightseeing on our own at the ports.

Could you please tell me what info you have so far? Which ports are you signing up for excursions, which you are doing on your own? What is the most cost effective ways?

My husband and I are pretty independent travelers and have never done a cruise. However, given how weak the dollar is now, we thought that cruising would be an economical way of seeing key cities.

The ship docks in Istanbul. Take tour, because the streets and traffic are murder. The Blue Mosque, Haggia Sophia, etc are incredible. The down side is the hard sell inj shopping areas.
The ships dock for Athens at Pireaus and it is a good drive to Athens. Not something to do on your own.
Katakalon is the port for Olympia which is about 20 miles away and worth visiting. You need to book a tour to get there. Katakalon is pleasant, but small and not too interesting on its own.
