Hi everyone,
we are just wondering what the weather will be like at this time of the year. A friend has said that it will be hurricane season. I am wondering why so many cruise ships are doing the above cruise then.
Please let me know your thoughts.
We can get a balcony cabin on Explorer of the Seas RCCL for a good price but don't want any problems with very bad weather.

It's hurricane season in the Caribbean in September. The reason that so many ships do the N.E. cruise in September is for the fall foliage. I've never done it, but heard it's beautiful.

Mid Sept is too early for the foliage. And the foliage isn't coastal anyway. IF this is a priority, be sure to consider renting a car and doing some research on the peak areas and drive to them.

Sailing NE in Sept, isn't shorts and tshirt weather either. Can be brisk on the sailing portion. And definately can encounter some residual hurricane action from the Caribbean. Last mid Sept. I sailed between 2 storms out of NY that missed me completely.

You can NOT count on weather.

Our friends did a fall foliage tour last September up to Nova Scotia & enjoyed it very much, no problems with the weather & said the foliage was lovely.

I don't agree that folliage is inland. The folliage is as coastal as it is inland. I live in NH and deal with the leaf peeper traffic every weekend in the fall. Mid-September is bit early for the Boston area but usually around peak in Northern NH/Canadian border. So, you'll probably notice a change as you move up the coast.

Yes the weather can be a bit unpredictable but its actually the nicest time of year. Cool crisp evenings and bright sunny days (when there isn't a hurricane remnant). I can't recall any signinficant remnent this past year in NH. Many weather systems get kicked out to sea by the time they hit Cape Cod. The further down the coast you are the more likely to get the Caribbean weather. Only about 1 hurricane every 15-20 makes landfall in RI/CT and few have much impact as they cross into NE. Coastal ME and NS rarely see that sort of weather.

That said, have you ever seen "The Perfect Storm". If you're not faint hearted, that sort of thing could probably be a bit exciting.

Fall in NE is the BEST time of year (except for the Winter skiing, Beaches and lakes in the summer, etc...)

I guess I wasn't clear. There are some cruisers who think that as soon as they get off the ship- there will be all the beautiful fall colors. Probably not. My point is if you really want the best exposure, get a car and make some drives. Most all states have a foliage web site that updates peak viewing areas. The more north you go, the earlier the color change. Do your homework if a priority.
