Cruise Specialist recommendations

Hi fellow travelers,

I want to see if you can recommend a travel agent who is a cruise specialist to help us plan our next cruise. My husband and I have taken a cruise up the Nile through Avalon and loved it. I suffer from motion sickness so I am afraid of doing ocean cruises, but I've heard some ships are marvelous for people like me. I would like to talk to a cruise specialist who can recommend cruises/ships based on this.

Thanks in advance.

The usual rule of thumb re motion sickness is try for a more mid-ship cabin on a deck that is not quite so high. Are you looking for a particular area? Europe? Carribean? We have used the same travel agent for our past 3 cruises and are now planning a 4th with her. E-mail [email protected]

Another general suggestion is to look for cruises with the fewest sea days. These usually mean long stretches in the open ocean and can be a bit rougher. Back and forth to Aruba, for example, tends to be choppier. However, the last time I cruised out of New Orleans, the ride down the Mississippi was pretty rocky as we had high winds...

Nhtraveller13, cruise from New Orleans are still Western Carribbean cruises. They just home ported in New Orlenas and they hit places in the Carribbean sea and not exclusively in the Gulf coast.

The sea is generally much calmer in the Carribean sea compare to the Atlantic side of the Carribbean if your are worried about motion sickness.

Travelerv, there was a thread a few months back specifically about motion sickness, tehre were discussions about casues and some preventive stuff. There were also some idle chit-chat so you will have to go through it. The link is below.

I am not sure what a cruise specialist can do for you. A cruise specialist would be more familar with the port of calls, the ships etc., and not necessary about motion sickness. They will proabbly give you the same lower deck mid-ship, go with a bigger baot, not on open water etc and that's about it.

I would siggest speaking to your fanily doctor pould be a better bet if you are so worry about motion sickness.

DW generally has no issues with motion sickness. We were on a ferry from Corzumel to Playa de Carman and it was really rough and she was okay. We were on teh Ruby Princess (130,000 tons) and the was so rough that they clsoe the pool, and the "slosh" from the swimming pool is higher than me! Yet DW did not get sick.

We were on a smaller 600 passenegr boat and most recently on a 100 passenger boat and she did just fine. The sea was not particularly rough but we can sense the rocking movement and saw the swell.

Yet, on the Island Princess (a relatively large ship), on a Panamaa cruise, she got sick from motion sickness. We were on the Island Pricness the second time the year after and she was sick on that too. The sea wasn't all that rough both times, definitely no worse than we had experience in the past. The only thing I can think of is the Island Pricness is a Pana-max ship so it is narrower to fit through the Pananma Canal, maybe the stablizer doesn't work as well but it is purely my speculation.

Go to CLIA's website: cruising.org to find a list of specialists. Look for a local agency with at least one accredited cruise counsellor on staff and talk to that person. Stay away from onlline agencies as they work on volume, not for your continued business and they do NOT offer better prices.
