Cruise from NYC w/2 year old

I'd like to take a cruise leaving from NYC so that I don't have to travel, but the only cruises leaving from NYC to go either Bermuda or Canada. Is one better than the other? I'm looking for something in September. Also, I'll be bringing my 2-year-old son. Is this appropriate? Finally, are these ships steady on the water b/c motion sickness is a consideration. Thanks.

NCL Dawn is cruising year from from NYC to Cape Canaveral, Miami and their private island.. Depending on what time in September..I wouldn't like to be goind down south after the middle of September. NCL Dawn is a large and new ship and I'm sure there shouldn' be any big problems...There is also a Carnval from NYC, but not sure where it's going.

I was on the Norwegian Dawn in June. There were many families and a loveley childs pool area on deck 12 aft. The Garden Cafe had a special kids area with a kid sized buffet line and kid sized tables. Some young families would feed their little ones there and then use the babysitting service so they could have a relaxed dinner later.
We had smooth sailing except for one day when there were 7-12 foot sea's and 30 knot winds across the deck. The cabin tv said the seas were "rough" but we felt very little motion. We brought bonine but did not need to use it.
Our cabind was on deck 8 aft on the inside and we did feel a little engine vibration in the cabin from time to time but it was not a bother to us.
The only other ship I have been on is the Majesty and I loved that cruise as well, but think that the Dawn may meet the needs of your family a little better

Good point Parrot Mom
We chose not to go to Disney on our cruise and enjoyed the uncrowded ship at that port but the folks who did go seemed to enjoy it. In restrospect, we should have cabbed it over to Cocoa beach or taken an airboat excrusion.
Parrot Mom, I find your posts to be very practical and right on the mark. We took our family vacation with two older teens on the Dawn but we are planning to celebrate our 30th anniversery on the nts to rent scooters for at least one day in Bermuda so we can get off the beaten path a little and get over to Clearwater Beach.
I am looking forward to reading your comments about the Sea when you return from your Bermuda trip. Like you, I wanted to try the ports that the Sea offered, but found it just too convenient to sail out of Boston.

I would not recommend the cruise to Bermuda because it usually gets rough at least once on every voyage & when it gets rough you feel it! I sailed from NY to Bermuda and we had 10-12 foot waves, and I felt the motion and was very sick. Even my lanlord who has cruised 30+ times won't cruise Bermuda again due to the rough waters (much rougher than carribbean cruises). So with a child, I would'nt recommend it. I would go with the Dawn cruise.

We have done the Majesty from Boston NINE times. (when it started out as the Royal Majesty).I think we missed no more than two trips..this will be the third..lol Because of that...we really want to be docked in Hamilton and the Dockyard ...especially now that it's been finished the Dockyard. One day in Hamilton shopping is about all my husband and my credit cards can take...I find it wall to wall with cruisers (okay, so I'm a snob)although I have been finding some great nook and crannies. My husband and I are too old (physically anyhow) to do mopeds and we were always on buses...and the Sea. BTW if you want recent pictures of the Sea a friend just sent [email protected] Would you believe we have NEVER been to Disney...lol.. Ifwe do take the Dawn one day we could do a fast tour of Disney and in all seriousness in Miami the new Parrot Jungle (we went to the old one before a transitional cruise from Miami a few years ago)

I know that scooters are very risky and.
agree that the locals do drive very fast
Maybie we should reconsider whether scooters are a wise choice for us.
We liked the ferry and bus arrangement last year, and do like to go off on our own as opposed to taking the ship tours.
Is there a taxi or tour that you recommend in Bermuda?
When we were on the Dawn I wanted to go to the Parrot Jungle in Miami but it's new location was not yet open. We took a city overview tour in Miami which drove by the new location which is close to the cruise terminal. We hope to go on the Dawn again some day so maybie next time. I think that you would like the Dawn even thought compared to the Majesty and the Sea it is GIANT.

You can also look into the new Carnival Legend.

They have a very nice area for the kids and the kids club will even take 2 years old in diapers. So if you would like an hour or two to yourself you have that option. The first cruise my kids were on, my son was just 2 and he loved the kids area for a couple of hours.

You can't go wrong with either this ship or Norwegian Dawn.

We never take ships tours but last trip with a group we took the 5 hour tour of Bermuda from the Majesty.. It took us to Gibbs Lighthouse and many spots that we would never get there by bus. One thing I have been wanting to do is the helmet dive.. NCL is offering one of the two being offered in Bermuda...but it's the other one which is considered the best and a tad more difficult to get to.. Did you read the article about cruising from Boston in the Boston Globe and how popular it is..I have a copy if you'd like it....While in Hamilton on a Wednesday night we took a horse and buggy tour which we thought was reasonable and I hope that we are able to do it in St. George this trip. A friend is on a repeat visit on the Majesty right now as I write this... and a woman who've I've been writing to is there on the Sea from NYC.. She had sent me her entire itinerary..lo, I;ve been checking the weather in Bermuda and it looks like showers every day, but very warm. if you are going to hire a taxi...if you can get a group together it would be much less expensive.. There is a site that will give you even more info.. please write [email protected]
