Costa Concordia Accident: Report Blames Cruise Line

Jump to last reply

An expert commission has just delivered a 270-page report on the tragic accident of the cruise ship Costa Concordia.

As expected, the report blames the captain. But also, the cruise line has made severe mistakes. Obviously. it was crucial that the Indonesian helmsman did not understand the captain's command because of restricted language capabilities.

Generally, the crew was incompetent and not properly trained.

I understand that many cruise lines employ low-wage staff from Indonesia and the Phillipines, however the accident proved that this parsimony jeopardizes the safety severely. I personally observed on a HAL cruise that sailors from Indonesia are lacking competence. When we sat in a tender boat and the sea got rough, our Indonesian helmsman damaged the boat when he tried to go alongside ship. Finally, he needed a dozen attempts before he succeeded with this trivial maneuvre.

For further information, see this article:

Maybe, other posters find more comprehensive reports on the web.

I personally would not book a cruise with Costa.
