Was wondering if anyone has done this cruise and has opinions and/or suggestions for shore excursions? We will be taking this cruise Aug 26-Sept 7, 2009 for our 30th anniversary. We will be booking the Concierge Class cabin but are still deciding on which deck to choose and whether to book in the back of the boat or on the side. We generally book at the back of the boat as we think it has more privacy. But I am thinking since this is the Mediterranean perhaps the side of the boat may be better for viewing sites as we cruise.
Although we have cruised the Caribbean many times and traveled to Europe many times, this is our first cruise in the Mediterranean. Any suggestions for shore excursions and making the best of the time we have in port would be appreciated. On past trips, we would have days to wander but being on ship's time, I am nervous about making the best of our time.
Any help or comments would be welcome. Thank you.

Thank you goldtrotter. That sounds interesting and I will look into it.
For Naples port I would suggest you www.naplesportshoreexcursion.com, we booked a tour to Amalfi coast and Pompeii, was the best tour of our vacation. The driver gave us a great tour along the coast, stopping for photos by the best places, he organized the Pompeii guide for us, she was very knowledgeable. I hugely recommend this company.
Here are some good guides for some of your ports:
Athens:
Dennis , his e-mail is d.limo@yahoo.com
Naples: Giovanni Rotondo e-mail is kaos31@fastwebnet.it
Giovanni is a very happy man ,always laughing
Florence:
Gioia Gualtieri, e-mail is gioia@itlimoservice.com
Barcelona: barcelonataxi@barcelonataxivan.com
ask for Michael ( very good)
Rome : Roberta , her e-mail is infor@guideroma.com
You really need a guide to maximize your time when you come to a port.
Thank you for the excellent leads.
You might have a hard time getting an aft cabin. You could be waitlisted, though. On our last cruise, we met quite a few people who booked those cabins the day they were released.
We took that same cruise on Millenium---wonderful ports.
Dejais - don't forget the "Ports of Call" section of www.cruisecritic.com There is lots of info posted on those boards.
Athens - we prearranged a taxi. You have to be licensed in Athens to call yourself a "guide," but so many of the guides don't offer transportation so you have to provide it. But if you have a good travel guide and a good taxi driver (and most are very experienced) you'll do fine. We contacted info@greektaxi.gr and they suggested an itinerary that included the Cape - we really enjoyed our full day with them. Athens is a huge city and by arranging a driver/taxi you can make the most of your stop there.
Santorini - we used a private guide there. Some people rented a car and others used a taxi from one town to the other. We enjoyed having a guide and shared his van with another couple. Went all over the island, lunch at a great spot, little winery. Very enjoyable day. Can highly recommend Dimitrius. info@thira-tours.com
Venice - easy to do on your own. Don't know about your ship, but we had a bus that took us to the train station area where we caught the vaporatta (sp?) down the canal to St. Marc's Sq and walked all over. Did the reverse going back.
Thanks everyone. I am all set on guides and excursions. We decided to do some ship excursions mixed in with some private tours. Will definitely have a trip report to discuss all when we return.
My husband and I are going to be on the same cruise with you. We are still exploring our options about the excursions. My cruise agent helped me with some ideas and would love to hear what you are doing.
Thanks so much, it is very confusing to us since this is our first visit to Europe.
Hope to hear from you.
Don't know if you saw my other post but this is what we decided to do:
Venice...We will explore on our own as we have been here before.
Dubrovnik...We are feeling pretty confident to take the bus into town and explore on our own. We will walk the wall, shop and have lunch here.
Athens...We have hired a driver and are sharing this private excursion with another couple we found on Cruisecritic.com. We will hire a private guide when we arrive at the Acropolis. Lunch and shopping in La Plaka.
Santorini...We are going to do this port on our own as well. Would like to figure out how to get to the beaches and maybe shop but definitely looking forward to a nice leisurely lunch in the afternoon.
Naples...Since we have been here before, we are going with a ship's excursion which will take us to Sorrento and then a private beach lido.
Rome...Again, having been here before, we opted for a ship excursion to Orvieto. Looking forward to seeing the countryside and enjoying some wine.
Florence...Deja vu. We have been here so we chose a do-it-yourself excursion from the ship. They provide transportation to Pisa and Florence and we explore on our own.
Cannes...We have hired a private guide, Sylvie DiCristo for the day with the same couple from the Athens excursion. Really looking forward to this as Sylvie has been very helpful with planning and information so far.
Barcelona...Having been to Spain but not Barcelona in the past, we chose to stay on here for two days after our cruise. We have booked the Hotel Majestic and are looking forward to enjoying some tapas, some flamenco, Las Ramblas, and of course, La Sagrada Familia.
If you have any questions, feel free to post back here and I will check back in a few days.
Thank you for getting back to me. As of today we have finally made all our plans for the excursions.
Venice..we also decided to explore it on our own.
Dubrovnik...we are also exploring this on our own. Our travel agent suggested a few things for us to do there and didn't feel it necessary for us to book anything.
Athens...we booked Athens Sightseeing and Acropolis from the ship, but I really wanted the Taste of Athens. Hopefully once I get on board I can get onto that excursion.
Santorini..we booked the tour of the island of Santorini and the Village of Oia.
Naples...we hired a private company at this port (recommended by our cruise planner). Benvenuto Tours. He is taking us to Pompei,Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
Rome...we booked the excursion Imperial Rome from the ship.
Florence...we booked historical Florence & Accademia Museum.
Cannes...we booked the Monte Carlo & Grand Casino excursion from the ship.
Barcelona...we also are staying an extra day there. We are staying at the Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona. We were told to go on the Hop on Hop off bus to go to the many sights. I found a sight on the internet that told me the top sightseeing places there. Looking forward also to walking Las Ramblas.
Thanks for getting back to me with your itinerary. Being novices in Europe we are not as adventurous, that is why we decided to do a cruise instead of a land only trip.
Perhaps we can meet up once we board the ship in Venice. We are in stateroom #7107. Hopefully you will see this post before we cruise.
lgeller....we are in #9038. I just started a Group on Facebook if you are a member. Let me know and I will give you the link to join. Thought people could share their plans and it could be a place to share pictures when we get back. My husband and I are in our 50's and from Florida. Where are you guys from?
Yes, I am a member of facebook. My husband and I are also in our 50's and from Florida also. We live in Coral Springs. What part of Florida are you from? We are very excited about the trip and since we are traveling alone on this trip we look forward to meeting other people. Pleas send me the link to the group on facebook.
