Trip Report Carnival Fascination Trip Report

Jump to last reply

This was the first vacation I had since Christmas and New Years. So for nine months, which felt like an eternity, I didn't go anywhere. I had planned a 60th birthday cruise for my family and friends on the Carnival Fascination. I wanted to be there on my birthday in September, but had to wait so everyone could get off work. I must say, this vacation, even a short one was much needed. I flew from Washington DC with three friends on Wednesday. Great flight on Jet Blue. I met my other three friends at the Aloft Hotel, Jacksonville airport. My daughters drove from Charlotte NC, that evening. They stayed at the Jacksonville Plaza Hotel. The Aloft was in a great location near shopping and restaurants. The next morning after talking to my daughters, my friends went shopping and I went down to the lobby to see what was for breakfast. It didn't look that great for $7.50 plus the cost of a drink, so I went to McDonald's. We all finally made it back to the hotel to get the shuttle to the ship. After a short ride, we were in line to get on the ship. The line wasn't too long however, my friend forgot to take a bottle of water out of her purse and security made her walk all the way to the back of the building to dispose of the bottle although I saw others bottle thrown away near the x-ray machines. After checking in and pictures, up to the Lido deck. I made a bee line for the Coconut Grove buffet. I sat near the entrance to wait for my daughters. My daughters arrived at different times because for some reason the shuttles had lists and they were not aware of this so they came at different times. I was extremely happy when I saw them. My daughters and I went to the front of the ship to see the bridge. It was very windy but just as exciting. I was a little puzzled by US Coast guard giving us an escort out. I have been on three previous cruises and never saw this. Finally made it to the room. There were three of the us and the layout was horrible, the only good thing was I am not a room person. It was two twin beds and a bunk at the bottom of the first bed. My one friend had the window and she had to either climb over the first bed or bend over and walk under the bed. I just could not see any other arrangement because I waited on another friend who said she wanted to go only to back out so we made do. I really enjoyed the Motown Show, but my other friends and family enjoyed all of the shows especially the Hasbro Show. I thought the food was great in the Inspiration Dining Room. Our ports were Freeport, which I liked and Nassau, not one of my favorites. We went to Lucaya to shop in Freeport and in Nassau we walked to the ferry port and went to Atlantis. The skies open and the down came the rain. My daughters walked over to Cabbage Beach while I waited for them to return. We got soaked walking back to the ferry. I did enjoy the guides taking about the history of Paradise Island. Walking back to the ship was fun because we were already wet. I went to my room to take off the wet clothes and went to sleep. Got up and looked for family and friends and found some of them in the casino. I lost $20. That was my limit. I did enjoy shopping at the $10 store. They had a special, buy 4 get the 5th item free so my friend bought a shawl, bag, a watch, and I bought a shawl and a bag. We split the cost. On the sea day, my daughter renewed her vows. It was in the library. There were 13 of total and it was set up very nice. I knew the planner said the captain would read the vows but I was surprised it wasn't his assistant. He was very nice and everything went off without a hitch. The cake was beautiful and they served champagne for the adults and apple juice for the children. The last night of the cruise the winds were rough. The Lido deck was closed. I took a nap and missed my dinner time. I went to my regular dining room and although I missed my setting, I was seated with a friendly group. I went to find my family and friend again and they were in the usual place, the casino. This cruise was great for my friends and family. The price was excellent for what we received. It is not a cruise for someone who like the bells and whistles of a large ship.
