Cabin Location: How concerned should I be?
Inexperienced in cruising, I booked a cabin on the Ruby Princess which is on a deck just below a food serving area that is open late into the night. How concerned should I be about noise from above?

Maybe, maybe not. If there is music, you might get that, which can be annoying, or the sounds of tables, etc being set up in the morning or cleaned up at night. Did you pick the cabin or was it a guaranteed? Which deck and cabin number? There is a web site, which I do not remember offhand, that rates many cabins, saying which to avoid. I will look it up.

I looked at the deck plans carefully. Personally, I think your cabin will be fine as far as noise from above. Your cabin is not under the service area. It is below the seating area of Cafe Caribe. There will actually be just a few tables and chairs above you or a little service area for tea and water, both no big deal. Caribe adjoins Horizon. Both are buffets, and while they may both be open during really busy times, often only one side or the other is open. They are not places for music and entertainment. They will be busy in the morning, during mid-day and mid to late afternoon when people return from shore. Even though they are open for dinner, (and I read somewhere that Cafe Caribe is now used once in a while for a special seafood dinner), it won't be busy really late once shows start. After shows end, the buffets get a bit busy again, but nobody is loud there. I, of course, can't guarantee anything. You could get some noise from so many people walking, but they won't be directly over you. I would not be one bit worried.
If you want to do more research, I did not see off hand the site I mostly use, but there is lots of info on choosing. However, you do not have some unusual corner cabin with windy corner balcony, or one above the engines or beside the elevator or over a disco.
You are on a high deck on the outside, so expect to feel more movement and noise of wind. That is normal. Your views will be great. Your cabin is lovely, close to elevators, but not so close as to be noisy. Frankly, I would be very, very happy with that cabin!

Thanks sass for delving into this.
As you are new to cruising a good rule to follow is to book a cabin with passenger decks above and below yours. Some say be away from elevators too though we have never found this to be a problem. Also if seasickness could be an issue get a cabin in the middle of the ship to minimize sensation of sway.
Cheers, Larry. .

Jacket,
I love researching stuff, not just for our own trips. It is fun. Funny thing is, I have only actually picked exact cabins 3 times - when family was going with us. I usually book a guarantee (to save money) in a particular class and hope for the best. Only once have I not liked the location. That was on the Connie when we met you. It was quiet, kind of tucked into a little corner with a couple of other cabins, which you would think was a good thing, but it felt isolated. Funny thing to say about a cabin on a large ship. LOL.
For the OP, many of the cabins on his deck experienced noise from cleaning and music venues, but being familiar with Princes, I knew exactly where his cabin is and felt sure it should be OK. Then, when I went to cruiseadvice.org, his was one of a very small group that was listed as good.
Have you experienced sea sickness? We've been lucky - never have. Would you be concerned about the OP's location on an upper deck, outside, about 10 or 15 cabins up from the Stern on Port side? Heights bother me a little and there was definitely more movement when we have been closer to the stern. Hope I haven't given the OP something else to worry about, but maybe your experience will be good too.
A funny aside. We were on MSC Divina in a small storm and I got nervous about 3 or 4 in the morning. DH had me get dressed and we went to an outside stair area on the stern, about deck 8 or 9, and he explained what was happening, showed me equipment, etc. very reassuring. I didn't care if he was probably just making things up. He is very, very good at that! I returned to a peaceful "cradle-rocked" sleep.

Well you married the right man. I do not get seasick but my wife does so this is why we usually get and a mid shift cabin with a balcony as low as possible.
I once made a colossal mistake of booking a front facing cabin on a small ship which was the Tahitian princess. Then we had some rough seas and my wife became quite ill. I thought we would have to simply cut the crew short but fortunately and amid ships suite or mini suite became available a few days since the cruise. It was vacated by a couple and the husband became quite ill and had to be taken off the ship to a hospital. It was very unfortunate for them and also quite lucky for us. I understand that this couple had saved for quite some time for this trip and had plans to visit relatives in the cook islands which was a schedule stop. However we missed that stop due to rough water so it was very unfortunate for them all around. T

Thanks, Sassafrass. With your help I also uncovered two reviews of cabins in the vicinity of ours, and neither of them complained about noise.
I note your "Quiet in the Forum" post. I've noticed the same. The popularity of the forum is at an all-time low in the ten years I've been participating. I wonder why.

Even roll calls on cruisecritic are practically non-existent when just a few years ago during our first crises, there would be more than a hundred individuals or couples on them. All the cruise lines now have forums and Facebook websites. Individuals also set up Facebook sites and blogs. So, many options for information. Since this was the only forum I knew about at the time, I came here for my first cruise and posters were all kind and helpful, there is so much good advice about port excursions, ports, etc. Then I met Larry, aka Jacketwatch, and his very sweet wife, so, I feel connected and still come to Fodors.
OK, Jacket, what is your theory?

The cabin B710 is fine with noise above. If you are a light sleeper, I would be concern wit the close proximity to the elevators. You are also very close to the only designated smoking area in the whole ship.
As to the quite to the forum, my theory is simple: when people ask for info here, instead of answering people's questions, the posters here simply told the new posters to go to Cruise critics and look for the answer there.
After a little while, people just go to cruise critics and look for the answers there, why bother to post here?
And Larry, I may disagree with you. I don;t see too many offensive posters. What I saw was a lot of the "regular" posters are no longer living in this cyber space for a number of reasons.
I miss Nigel aka Dogster. Percy posted less and less after his wife's passing. T69 moved to warmer climate and also frequent the forum less. The most authoritative figure on Alaskan Cruise Budget Queen is also missing. The list goes on and on.
The only one that is semi regular is me Larry and Sass.

We are all entitled to our opinions so hey as long as its respectful then its all good.
There was a post some time ago on a thread, I forget which one that had a link to a witch doctor. Yes a witch doctor. I triangled it 4-5 times, no results. Finally some literally months later it was finally removed.
I have triangled another one 4 times, no results. So I emailed the mods like 4-4 times. Still no results.
I could give more similar examples but you get the point. This is what I mean.
I pretty much avoid the lounge too. You can't have a discussion w/o someone or several who start some ridiculous school yard spat.

It is on the open area at the end of the ship, supposedly on on one side of the ship only. You will see ashtrays on the tables. He is ahead of the area but of he wants to take advantage of the Terrace Pool which is literally steps away, he'll have to walk through the "smoking area".
That's one area of the ship that I totally avoid. The back-end open area of the Princess fleet. The way it was explained is that people should not be able to smell the smoke, especially when the ship is moving ... But there are ashtrays and residues.
If happytrailstoyou is just going to leave his cabin and take the stairs or elevators, the smoke should not be a factor. If he intend the use the sitting and pool area near the back ... that would be a concern.

Oh -- and I also wanted to say that there is also a technical issue re the triangles. Most go through but for some members they just don't work. I don't understand the details but it has something to do w/ the member's e-mail address
