bought too soon.

I locked in on a good fare on American Airlines for our cruise next year. We're flying from NY to Miami. After reading some reviews I'm wondering if we shouldn't have booked an earlier flight. Ship leaves at 5:00p.m. and we arrive at 12:20p. What do you think?

Always best to go the day before.

Lauren,

On our last cruise our departure from our home airport was delayed several hours due to fog. We originally had an early morning departure but didn't get out of town until noon. Our ship departed from Miami at 4:00, the plane landed at 3:20. You can imagine the hustle & bustle just trying to get to the boat in time. They weren't certain they could even get our luggage to us and said if not we could get it at the next port, which we were to visit in 2 days! Surprisingly, we did get our luggage but learned a valuable lesson.
The next cruise, we will definitely fly down a day ahead.

If the weather is fine in NY, then you will have no worries. NY airports are notorious for canceling and delaying flights to florida. If you take off on time, you will be set. in the future, always try to go a day early or at least leave NY on the very first plane available for that day.

That time frame cuts it too close. Even if you have a slight delay, weather or mechanical problem or whatever, you could end up missing the ship. The fee you would pay to change your flight would be much cheaper than having to fly to catch the ship! Not to mention you won't have the stress of constantly looking at your watch and freaking if things run late.

If no delays, you will be perfectly fine. If still worried about it, try to go standby for an earlier flight. That is the only way without a change penalty.

Well...called the airline and would be charged $100/pp (there are three of us) to change ticket. Reservation operator suggested, as you did, to call night before for standby...so that is what we'll do. Ugh!
