Back from the Med
My wife and I just returned from Barcelona. We cruised the Med on the Legend of the Seas with an itinerary of Villefranche, Corsica, Rome, Sicily and Malta. We also stayed in Barcelona 5 nights. If anyone has any questions please feel free to email me.

Hi.John--Read your e-mail and need some advice. I'm going on a Med cruise on 10/13/00 with my family. Which shore excursion would you recommend for the port of Villefranche. Also this is the first day of the cruise and the thought of waking up at 6AM for an all day excursion to either Nice,Eze&Monaco--Grande Corniche,Eze & Monaco, etc. makes me exhausted!!!Do you think that we'd be selling ourselves short by taking just the scenic french riviera trip????(I visited Monaco/Monte Carlo about 28 years ago,so I have been there. My family has never been)Did you take a tour in Malta?? We were thinkingof just taking the transportation part when in Rome.. Please respond. Thanks

Paula, we sailed on this cruise in 1999. The people at our table were unimpressed by the shore excursions from Villefranche. We took the train from Villefranche to Eze and hiked up, about an hour uphill, and then back to Nice where almost everything was closed because it was Sunday. You can also take the train to Monte Carlo, probably a better bet if you're docking on a Sunday.

Malta is actually quite small and is easy and inexpensive to get around on your own via bus. We took a bus out to Mdina and spent the rest of the time exploring Valletta, seeing a movie on Malta's role in WWII and visiting the military museum. Fellow passengers enjoyed the boat ride.

We also took a train from Civitavecchia to Rome, much cheaper than the ship's transportation and also a bit quicker. It stops near St. Peter's and at Termini Station. There was a good post with prices, times, etc. re: getting to Rome from Civitavecchia on the Europe board. The people on our boat who took the Rome trip that included St. Peter's enjoyed their day, the people that took the trip that essentially drove by the sites did not. Rome is easily visited on your own, however, even if you do opt for the safer option of ship transport.
