Are we loosing out not going thur the entire PC

Jump to last reply

We are planning a cruise to the Panama Canel leaving Ft Laud.... w/stops in Colon, Puerto Limon & Roatan. Are we missing out not going thur the entire locks out to the Pacific? Anyone been on the Jungle tours? Or the Submarine Tours out of Georgetown or Cozumel areas? If so which tours do you recommend? This is a tour thur Celebrity on the ship Horizon. Any feedback is much appreciated on the tours, locks and ship to choose? Thanks

Depends on what your expectations are. We did the same thing and yes, I was disappointed.

They usually call these "partial canal transits" and all it really means is that you enter the canal by coming thru the first locks on the Gulf side and sit in a big holding lake for a few hours while people get off on tours.

The locks are interesting, but other than that there is not much to see. If you went all the way thru the canal you'd see the rain forest, the canal, etc. You won't even really see the canal itself, you'll just be inside the locks of the Panama canal.

Hope this helps. We did not go on the tours, but I have heard good things about the rain forest tours which would add to the experience.

You'll enter the canal through the Gatun Locks which are in three steps (the largest of the three locks on the entire canal length. From there the ship enters Gatun Lake...although it doesn't feel like being in a "canal" as much as if you were going through the Gaillard Cut farther on, you are in the "canal"...a really WIDE part of it.
I would be prepared for the following...unless you have a balcony cabin...those wonderful and charming folks you met in the lounge last night will be out BEFORE DAWN on the front of the ship and will be staking out territory so they can watch the "going through the lock" thing with an unimpded view...and they will not be "charming" if you happen to get in their way, either. Don't believe me??..just wait and see.
The lock process is fascinating in and of itself for many folks and I would suggest watching the operation..perhaps from the stern of the ship...remember, you'll be doing the whole thing later in the day in reverse.
As to the excursions...if you're talking about the Atlantis Submarine out of Georgetown my experience is that it will be cheaper if you book it yourself rather than as a shore excursion. If you are pulling into Playa del Carmen for possible shore exursions I would be cautious if Chichen Itza is is a GREAT experience but a very long and wearying bus ride undfortunately.
