Are there any cruises to South America that depart from the United States?

They exist, but they ordinarily last for 3+ weeks, allowing at least a week to 10 days just to get down to the Caribbean. They are often offered in January/February as part of a world cruise (you just pick the South America segments that you want), and they are ordinarily on upscale cruise lines.
So I'm not sure this is going to solve your problem if you can't afford an airfare to South America. Either way, you're going to have to fly there or back. I'm not aware of any real South America round-trip cruises. Though several call in Cartagena, Columbia, and even Margarita Island, Venezuela, none are going to take you down to Brazil, for instance, or to Buenos Aires.

A good way to check out what is available is to go onto a site such as Vacations to Go. There you can find a list of all the South American Cruises with ports of departures, length, etc. As I said there are lots of them starting in October and ending in May. The OP said nothing about length, time of year, or type of cruise ship.

Check out Holland America, Statendam, 31 days leaving San Diego, California and returning to San Diego, CA. It leaves November 3, 2013 and returns December 4, 2013. Also check Cruise Critic. Good luck, hope to see you on board.
