We are considering and comparing connected Oceania cruises from Rio to Valparaiso in December with connected Regent cruises from Lima to Manaus, Brazil in January and February. We are trying to look at the advantages and disadvantages of seeing Antarctica on Oceania and seeing the Amazon on Regent, and would appreciate opinions from those who have been to either or both.

Dallasite, Assuming you're located in Dallas, do you know that there is a great TA there that specializes in Regent, also books on Oceania, and has escorted several cruises to Antarctica on different cruiselines? I'd start by talking to them. We've not been on any South American or Antarctica intineraries yet, but are planning on SA in 2009. I don't like posting specific names of TAs on the board, but feel free to drop me a line: dreps@comcast.net.
That's a hard one - each place is so different. I have done both Antarctica and the Amazon but on small ships - 100 passengers and less. I just can't imagine getting the "feel" of either place on a large ship. Taking into consideration the amount of wildlife and scenery, I would pick Antarctica - it is an amazing awe-inspiring experience. Landings from larger boats are limited to a maximum of 100 people at a time so would become very time consuming. I might pick the Amazon for a larger ship and do the Antarctic later on a small ship.
I've done the entire South America on Regent and it was absolutely fantastic. Read Dreps' posting above and email him. I'm positive we use the same TA and she specializes in exactly what you're looking at doing. You can call her 800 # and she can tell you all the pros and cons and the best way to price it etc.
