Alaska in summer

My husband and I are looking to take a Princess cruise to Alaska this year. He is constrainted by school schedules so we are only able to go June - Aug.Of these months is there one that is better than the other to cruise?

We were in Alaska late July/early August and it was very nice. It was still fairly cold in places, but OK. The days were a little shorter but still light until the early morning. Too early and its cold and too late is cold again. I think July is good. Look at the prices. The best weeks will be the most expensive

We went in late June a few years ago - and were there for the Summer Solstice. It was light all the time, which was great as there was always something to see from the ship. It was chilly - but it is Alaska. We were told there were more kids/families later in the summer, and their absence was just fine with us.

I would go in June during the Solstice. We experienced that during our Baltic cruise and its a treat. It's practically daylight all the time and it's a unique time.

The best times are the most expensive ones.

2 years ago we went on a Princess cruise the first week in August. After I booked I read how the cruising area is wetter than the rest of AK and that August is the rainy season. We did not have one drop!!! We booked about July 1 and got a great deal. ENJOY!!!

So we ended up going in June and it was a great trip! Princess Cruise was good. Unseasonably warm in Seattle when we left so the pool on the ship got lots of use. We had great weather on our Ketchican and Skagway ports of call but it did rain all day in Juneau. However on that day we took a smaller boat from the ship to see the glaciers, very expensive but worth it. I think we got very lucky to see a huge calving glacier. Great way to see Alaska and you do have to be prepared for any kind of weather. I brought layering pieces, such as an ice breaker shirt, a light but warm Patagonia coat and then a Patagonia rain coat to go over these pieces. Seemed like a lot but all these coats pack up small and I used each of them. I recommend bringing swimwear in case it is a bit warm and if you want to use the hot tub on the ship which we did. I had to borrow a suit from a friend in Seattle b/c I forgot mine.

Glad you had a great time. Alaska is well worth it IMO.

Cheers, Larry. .

BTW we went in 2005 during the last week of August and had plenty of daylight though of course not like during the solstice. Its was decent weather wise requiring at most a light jacket and like you it rained basically all day in Juneau though it wasn't much and misting only at times.
