I am taking a Northbound Alaska cruise from Vancuver next June and am trying to decide what room is the best? For this cruise is it better to have a room with a balcony on the starboard or the port side of the boat?

Northbound would be Balcony on Starboard side (right hand side when facing front)
Well make sure your balcony does not have an "obstructed view" like ours did last month on Holland American Line. We could not sit on ours and see anything--the railings were total metal!! I had no idea when I booked and I do not think there was any indication that the view would be obstructed. We did not get a discounted cabin or anything like that. It was our 50th wedding anniversary and I booked what I thought was a cabin with a "balcony"--not a metal railing!!!
JaneB, congrats on your 50th wedding anniversay and I am sorry to hear that you got a metal railing for your celebratory cruise.
In case others want to avoid that situation, I thought I'd point out that on the maps on Holland America's website that show where each stateroom is located, there is a symbol that designates the balconies with metal railings.
