Another question...
We've got the standard nine-hour day on St. M and will be coming into Phillipsburg on a Tuesday.
We're not thrilled with any of the cruise's tours for this port, and we'd like to see a bit of Phillipsburg and Marigot and spend time on one of the beaches. It will be my wife and I and 13-year old son.
What are your recommendations for best beaches? I've read the books, but would like your advice.
Also, what's the best way to get around the island to the places you'd recommend? Taxi or bus?
Thanks in advance!
Patrick

Orient Beach is stunning, but a portion of it is clothing-optional, so I don't know how comfortable with your 13-year-old being there. (There are lots of children on the beach, tho.)
Also, spend some time in Grand Case on the French side. It's a laid-back Caribbean town with great restaurants along the water.
Of course, spend some time shopping in Phillipsburg. It's quite lively and fun.
I'd suggest seeing a bit of Philipsburg, and then taking a cab to Marigot. If you want to do the beach, I agree that Orient Beach is another good idea (lots to see and do), as well as Grand Case (my favorite beach since the water is very calm and it's never really crowded).
For some great local flavor at lunch, try out the newly refurbished "lolos" in Grand Case. They are various stands serving local food at it's best with great prices.
If you hit the beaches, be sure to have the cab return to pick you up at a designated time, since it's hard to find cabs in those areas. Philipsburg and Marigot have cab stands, however.
