Will my iPhone work in the Dominican Republic?

Hi, PeaceOut. The basic answer is yes: once you land in DR your phone service will come up as Claro or Orange--depending on your location, I think.
You didn't ask about about saving on the per-minute charges, but I'll mention that anyway. Unless you already have international roaming in your plan, you will probably pay $ 1.99/minute. This can be reduced to 1.69/minute by signing up for "World Traveler" for the month in which you plan to be there. That service costs $5.99/mo., on top of the usage charges. You can weigh that 6 bucks against the 30 cents per minute savings, and against how much you think you might use the phone down there, and decide if it's worth it.
World Travler service, like all features and plan details available through AT&T, can be viewed/changed/enrolled via AT&T website--without having to wait on hold for an agent. You can just manage the whole thing yourself. Website also tells you the per-minute charges for any country you are interested in visiting.
Having said all this, I'll qualify by saying my phone is not an iPhone, but is a 3G phone purchased through AT&T and on the AT&T network. SO it's possible there are differences to your specific situation. I stand behind my comments about making use of the AT&T site, though.

Thank you so much. I much prefer navigating their website to their voice service. I will look at World Traveler service, but your explanation tells me a lot. I will only be there 8 nights, so if I plan my work accordingly, I can be free of voicemail and e-mail work. Sounds like a plan.
I am visiting an old friend who has lived there since the early 70s. It will be so much fun.

Hola again, PeaceOut---just another note to wish you a great trip and to ask that you post a report once you return.
The DR suffers a bit on this forum, IMO, as it is viewed by many as just another Caribbean beach location. [not that there's anything wrong with that, per se] But the fact that you will be visiting a "local" should mean you'll have a much more colorful, rewarding experience than the typical 7-night all-inclusive charter.
You are fortunate, then, to have an in-country friend as a guide. Hearing about life as an ex-pat (assuming that's the case) is always fascinating to me. I look forward to reading your report---enjoy your trip !

Iphone works perfectly well with the AT&T plan, but the charges are outrageous. There's lots of free WiFi spots on the beach. You may want to limit yourself to using the new with the free WiFi and maybe the Skype app.

Thanks again. I will probably just use my friend's Internet for email and forgo the phone use.
Lifes2short, I will try to remember to post a report. My friend went to the DR right after we graduated college, with the Peace Corps. He fell in love with the place, opened his own business, and raised his family there for the most part (until the oldest was school age). Now he has his business there and in the states. Smart guy. He's dying to shoe us around. I'm going with two other mutual college friends.
