Will I be too isolated at Ottley's?

Jump to last reply

I am trying to find a nice place to stay in St. Kitts. Ottley's looks gorgeous and has great reviews. However, I am concerned that it may be too isolated. Has anyone stayed there>?

    Belinda,
Haven't stayed at Ottley's, but did stay at Rawlin's Plantation which is close by. Same setup with a main house and cottages.
Everything depends on what you want. If you want excitement and nightlife, you've made the wrong choice.
If you want peace and quiet and good food, then you've made the right choice.
When we were at Rawlins we were the only ones there. The young English couple who owned Rawlins at that time made us feel like we were visiting old friends at their country house. The four of us sat on the veranda and drank port and talked until 2 in the morning, with classical music rolling out over the sugar cane and no lights in any direction other than stars.
The food was outstanding. The service was impeccable.
They took us for drinks at The Golden Lemon. They let us take their car into Basse Terre to go shopping, and to go up Brimstone Hill for pictures and the story of the Gibralter of the Caribbean.
It was the absolutely best, most relaxing vacation we've had.
This was quite a few vacations ago, and, short of renting a staffed villa at Tryall in Jamaica, nothing has come close.
But, again, the caution is very simple -- is this the kind of vacation you want, where you make your own entertainment?

You will feel very isolated at Ottley's. We stayed there in Feb. 2000. Definitely need a car - Ottley's staff is somewhat unreliable with getting you places. We were forgotten after having signed up to get a ride into town, and friends we met there were actually completely forgotten after being dropped off at a deserted beach for the day. It was evening before they were able to get back to Ottley's. The accommodations are nice, but if you get a cottage make sure it is NOT the one next to Marty's (owner) family. Because everything is open-air, sound travels quite well. Marty's kids and the clattering in their kitchen woke us up every morning bright and early! Something I would never have thought to ask about! Also, we had several power outages -don't know if that is common on that island or not. We went to the Golden Lemon for dinner one night and wish we had opted to stay there with the beach out your door.

Ottleys is beautiful, and the owners are very friendly, but the best beaches are on the southern portion of the island (perhaps a 25 minute drive from Ottleys). Golf and the casino are also about a 20-25 minute drive (both are at Frigate Bay). And the center of town is quite a drive too. So it really depends on what you want.

I have stayed at Frigate Bay Resort once(not bad, but nothing great) and Horizons Villas twice (which I liked a lot -- and it has great views and laundry machines in the villas). Both of these last 2 are in the Frigate Bay area, which is where I prefer to stay on St. Kitts. In December, I saw some new villas right near Horizons and I was told they're at Potato Bay (basically, Frigate Bay), but I don't know the names of these villas -- perhaps a travel agent would, but they look beautiful).

Then you have a 5-10 minute ride to the best beaches and to town. I love snorkeling and this is best at South Friars Bay and White House Bay (both 5 minutes or so from Frigate Bay).

Ottleys, Rawlins and Golden Lemon are all beautiful, but I think very far from the nice beaches on the southern portion of the island. I have preferred to stay in the Frigate Bay area and then make lunch and/or dinner trips to Ottleys, Rawlins (especially Sunday brunch) and Golden Lemon. But on all of my trips to St. Kitts, I have still managed to visit these places, and they make for nice drives.

One last note, if you want seclusion, you can still get that ... even on the beaches to the south. There are so many of them, and it's not uncommon to be one of 10 people on long stretch of sand.

    Enjoy the trip!
