it's beautiful and expensive, and not a carribean island. it may be too cold to swim or lie on the beach until late June and hurricane season makes late summer and fall problematic. it's great for a golf vacation, but really little difference in climate from about Jacksonville Fl area.

I just returned from Bermuda and the first poster was right. I don't usually worry about money but Bermuda is way to expensive, to commercialized and a big tourist trap. The beachs are beautiful, the people are great and the taxi drivers do give you a nice tour. It is a great place to visit(once)but thats it for me. Strictly my personal opinion.

I do not get it!!! Bermuda is expensive compared to what?? Its cheap compared to Barbados, Anguilla, St. John, St. Barts!!! It has all different price ranges and lots to do. Sure no rental cars and taxis are expensive, but the bus system is excellent. Bermuda has lots of interest. Since it is not the caribbean beach weather is limited -really form mid April to the end of October. Airfare can also be cheap!

Since Bermuda is expensive that is why the hotels are suffering and most people visit by cruise ship. The powers that be in Bermuda do not want to make it an inexpensive island and draw "riff-raff". As a result many of the hotels are shuttering and one is going way upscale. Rates do drop in the winter months though and many people take advantage of it. Frankly, I can't wait to go back for the 10th time..

Bill, I know that you only recommend the Timothy Beach Resort on St. Kitts. I've always thought that you have invested interests there. So put my mind at ease and give me a detailed review of Bermuda - what you did, where you stayed, what you ate, who you met, etc, what you recommend, what you don't, etc.

Annie - Bermuda is in the same latitude as North Carolina and has the same weather as NC. It can only be visited in the summer, otherwise it is too cold to swim and even in the summer, it's Atlantic waters are not as warm as the Caribbean.

Bermuda is my favorite place to go. I am going for my 10th visit in Feb. The weather and water is much warmer than N.C. I spent the Millenium New Year's Eve there and was swimming and sunning. I've been there in almost every month and have enjoyed each one.

Bermuda is the place for ME! Not necessarily the place for you? As far as being expensive and the warm weathers months, it is all relative. I've been there in February and gotten a sun burn and swam! Though we tend to go in May (and we always swim then!). It has some of most nautural beauty I have ever seen.

Anne: Little interest? Well it was only fairly recently that Bermuda decided that they had better do something to attract tourists. Before it was very exclusive, "a playground for the rich". The accommodation is expensive for what you get and many people feel that if they are spending US$400 a night for accommodation, it had better be nice. It's an idyllic place, but you pay for it. Also, it's expensive to get around. Scooters can be dangerous and buses, while very good, don't offer flexibility.

I spent as much time as I can in Bermuda. I am very lucky to have friends that live there, it certainly makes a difference as far as cost and needing to be busy all of the time. We housesit so our trip is airfare and mopeds, we count our blessings. Everything there is usually high but remember Bermuda imports everything so all people there pay duty which adds to the cost of everything, food, gas, clothes, etc. Bread is around 3plus as is milk for a half gallon so don't think that a resturants gets its food cheap it doesn't. We spend about three weeks over there around august, hot, darn right love it. As far as things to do it is quiet, we snorkel almost everyday by tobacgo bay, we cook out, we meet people and show them the island, its great. We do the other resorts on different islands but I would give them up if I had to for my trips to Bermuda. It is sad that the island is so costly, but there are deals if you look, don't worry about being on the water for heavens sake the island is only about two-three miles wide at the most, the island is all beaches on the south coast. If you really want to try it there is lots of places to rent with a kitchen eat your breakfast and lunch by the ocean than go for dinner. There are some resturants that aren't as costly or as stuffy. You can make it a vacation to remember without all the noise and party, just enjoy the island and its people. Any questions feel free to e-mail I would be happy to help if I can.

Popularity of destinations change as one island becomes more in vogue than others. Bermuda is lovely but reports often say that the bloom is off the rose with a tired island but they are working hard to bring it up to speed to compete with others in the same price catagory. It is a wonderful late Fall or early Spring destination but it doesn't have the same status anymore for those seeking to the most fashionable destinations. It's much more fun for some to name drop St. Barts, Anguilla or St. John to name a few than stodgie ol' Bermuda. Not for me tho. It is lovely.

why so little interest? Its simple really. The hotels are 5 star expensive, but are only really 3 star hotels. Taking the bus everywhere is a pain in the you know what- you waste time waiting for a bus, sometimes you have to walk for long distances to get where you're going from the bus stop, if you do have to walk there are no side walks and in many area no place at all to walk except in the road, just try taking snorkeling gear on the bus (especailly after you use it), and if you go to the beach and then get on the bus everyone gives you a dirty look if you are wet or sandy in any way. The service is sub-par, especially in restaurants since the tip is included in the bill (whats the incentive?). There is very little night life. There are not that many decent beaches. Want to pay $18.00 for a freak'n hamburger or $9.00 for a cocktail? Should I go on?
