which caribbean island/town for beachfront close to town

My husband and I are looking for a beachfront hotel in the Caribbean, preferably not too big, within safe walking distance to a small town with restaurants, music, and maybe a little shopping. We really enjoy walking out to a long beautiful beach and eating most of our meals out. We've been to Jamaica, but really didn't like the big resorts and all inclusives. Loved the town atmosphere and restaurants/nightlife of Key West, Fl., but the beaches weren't that nice. I hope this helps! Planning to go last week in January, mid range budget. Thanks in advance! I appreciate any advice you can give.

There are several hotels on the beach at Reduit Beach St Lucia and you can walk into Rodney Bay to find restaurants/bars etc.

Aruba has similar, so has Riviera Maya and couple of the French islands but I guess you will only want English speaking islands. Grand Cayman also but that might be difficult for a mid range budget but we have done it moderately.

Look at hotels/resorts in Grand Case on St. Martin. Also, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico or in the Frigate Bay area on St. Kitts.

The 7 mile beach in Negril (Jamaica) has what you request. It's not big resorts or all inclusives, more local style beachfront hotels.

Red Hook - St. Thomas... Sapphire beach gets bad reviews but if you get a good condo.. nice sitting at the beach having cocktails looking at St. John.. they have a $2 trolley now to get you around the island

Broncett: The $2 safari does not get you all around St Thomas, and it doesn't run at night.
