We are planning a Feb. vacation to Nevis and St. Kitts. We are planning on staying at Hurricane Cove in Nevis, but can't seem to find a place we like on St. Kitts. The ideal - on or near the beach, smallish, good design, and not $500 a night. Are we asking too much? We don't need all the bells and whistles, would much rather stay somewhere unusual than the run of the mill hotel/motel. If anyone has any suggestions we would really appreciate it! Thanks!!

Hi Tom,
The new Marriott is supposed to be open by then. Some other choices are Ottley's and Golden Lemon. Also Timothy Beach Resort, but I don't know much about that one.
The Golden Lemon is up for sale. It's still open, but it is on the market.
You might want to look into SeaLofts. They are condo type accommodations on the beach.
Tom - St Kitts is beautiful - not too developed. Keep an eye out for the green vervet monkeys, and definitely take a drive down to the southern tip of the island - unbelievably beautiful and untainted. Don't miss snorkeling and live music at the Turtle Beach Club - lots of fun. And take a hike through the rain forest. I stayed at Timothy Beach last summer. Nothing fancy - clean, simple, and inexpensive. It's no luxury hotel, but the staff was very pleasant and helpful, and the food at the restaurant connected to the hotel was simple and great. The beach at the hotel is good for snorkeling & water sports, but it's not the most beautiful beach on the island. St Kitts doesn't have lots of big beach resorts, and there isn't much in the way of entertainment or nightlife. It's kind of quiet at night, but extremely beautiful, with some excellent restaurants. Ottleys plantation is gorgeous, with incredible views of the water, but that'll be expensive, and it's kind of secluded up on its hill. There's a condo village above the Timothy area, and you should also look into the Frigate Bay beach hotel - I don't know much about it but it's probably right on the water. Have a good trip.
Ottley's Plantation Resort is the best place to stay on St. Kitts. It is tropical and quiet.
We've stayed at Timothy Beach in Frigate Bay also and it meets your requirements nicely. Our one bedroom suite had everything we needed including some chaises on the balcony for viewing the sunsets. The pool and little restaurant were both ocean front. The Frigate Bay area is gorgeous and will be even more so when the new golf course is complete. Timothy Beach is the only place in this area which is directly on the Caribbean. We enjoyed it and would return.
Stayed at Timmothy Beach and would not go back. Not for me the Horizon Condo's looked OK, or condo's by the Atlantic by thr Marriott, better yet try the Marriot if its open.
Look at information for the Bird Rock Beach Resort. It's quiet and intimate.
While Ottleys is quite nice, both plantation inns are very expensive.
I see you are planning on staying at HCB, which is my favorite place on Nevis, honestly, you will just love it dearly.
There really are no run of the mill hotels or motels on the island. They all have a special appeal. The Timothy Beach Resort is a great place to stay and we have stayed there for more than 6 years straight (no we have no financial interest). We just love it there. It is beachfront to the Caribbean waters and is a great place to snorkel and go shelling. The prices are very reasonable and the rooms and suites are quite large with many amenities.
If you choose to stay at the self caterting condos at Island Paradise (also great as we have stayed there 3X), the only downfall if you like to swim and snorkel, is that it is on the Atlantic side which is quite rough and not suitable for many water sports at all. Great to look at but not to swim in.
You could stay at Sealoft which are fully equipped houses on stilts, right next door to IP.
The new Marriott is not taking reservations yet, but will be very expensive and is also on the Atlantic side.
If you wish to get away from it all and be on the reclusive southeast peninsula, I strongly suggest the apartment on the beach at Turtle Beach. It is fantastic there as well and we have stayed there 2X. Gary is a wonderful host and manager. The only thing with TB is that it is 20 minutes away from anything else, but that is the main reason we liked it there so much. It is also inexpensive, priced closer to Timothy Beach Resorts prices.
I would suggest TBR first over any other place, then either IP aor TB. You can not go wrong with any hotel/resort on the island really with the exception of the Papillon.
Have a super time and enjoy that stay at NHC. I am so jealous!

Hurricane Cove Bunglalows are absolutely outstanding and unfortunately do not get the advertising they so critically deserve by any means. The hosts are fantastic people. I hope you booked a bungalow with a private pool, you will enjoy that so much. We stayed there 3 times.
As far as St. Kitts is concerned, I also feel that Timtohy Beach Resort is the best place. It is situated on calm waters, has a restaurant, and the suites are huge with everything you could want in them. Very comfortable and close to a variety of other restaurants. Jack Tar Village, the all-inclusive which is going downhill, has a teeny tiny casino inside which you could visit if you want to lose money.
The Horizon Villas are disappointing really and they want quite a lot to stay in one. They are far from the beach and up on a super steep long hill. They offer nothing except for a place to sleep and a pool.
The Frigate Bay Resort, while a nice place, is also a long steep downhill walk to the beach and does not have much to offer its guests.
Island Paradise is real nice. They are condominiums with only 2 floors. Very quiet place. Pool and grill for all who stay to use and a short walk to the rough Atlantic Beach (which, coincidentally is great for walking or horseback riding). They are a couple/few hundred $$ more than Timothy, and does not have a restaurant, but we would stay there again without a doubt.
We have been going to St. Kitts for about 12 years now. We have stayed at each and every hotel/resort/inn on the island. The Plantation Inns are outstanding, but so far away from everything on the island and you definitely need a rental car. They also cost a fortune to stay at.
The Golden Lemon is unbelievably expensive and the farthest away from anything and everything you could get. While the small GL is nice, it is not in a nice area of the island, and you will definitely question if you made the right choice while you take your very long maniac taxi ride all the way there.
Frigate Bay is a wonderful area. It has everything to offer. You are less than 10 minutes from town, but still not in a crowded area.
Choose TBR, save a lot of money, get a suite, and eat at PJ's, Marshalls, Fisherman's Wharf, and Turtle Beach to name a few. I personally frown upon getting the meal plans anywhere because you really miss out on experiencing the fabulous island food.
Have a super time!

Article on St. Kitts in this month's Caribbean Travel & Life issue.
Thanks so much for all the responses. We are booked in top floor ocean view room at Timothy Beach. And yes, we have booked a bungalow with a private pool at HCB in Nevis.
We are very excited!
Again, thanks for all the help...this site is amazing, no?!
Any news on the new Marriott in St. Kitts? I called Marriott last night and didn't receive much help. They said that the spa and golf course wouldn't be open until mid-2003. Anybody else heard anything different?
The Marriott will not open as scheduled. The "soft" opening for contractors, family and friends is scheduled for Feb. 22/03 and taking reservation for the general public "maybe" in June or July. (Corporate meeting 2 weeks ago)
You can get a steal on Timothy Beach right now on the wheretostay.com auctions. Closes tomorrow and no bids yet.

I don't know who keeps posting about the Golden Lemon being up for sale...maybe a competitor??? It is for sale, but it has been for some time - we just got back and spoke with the owner. He is an older gentlemen, looking for retirement - his clientele has changed from the 50 and 60-somethings who used to sit on the porch and play cards in the evening to 30 and 40-somethings who come to enjoy their privacy. He misses the comapny and has decided to sell. He is NOT giving up on the quality service the Golden Lemon is known for -as a matter of fact, he is looking for the right buyer who is interested in keeping the reputation in gear. We have another set of reservations in April and have no qualms about it being under different management when we go back.....I have every confidence the new owner - if there is one by then, will be concerned about keeping patrons happy - wouldn't you think???
We had lovely time- our villa was quaint and our plunge pool was clean and private. Spent some time reading on the little beach and ate way too much good food...can't wait to return - be there in April!!
