Where to stay in Bonaire?

Jump to last reply

Husband and I planning to visit Bonaire for first time late June. He windsails and I don't. We need a recommendation where to stay. It doesn't have to be at Lac Bay. Anyone been to Great Escape?

I have to recommend Harbour Village in Bonaire. It is by far the nicest hotel, especially if you want to relax in luxury. The atmosphere and the family that runs it are fantastic. All the stuff your husband likes are very close. Have a good time.

Although I agree that the Harbour Village is
a luxury hotel I wouldn't be staying there out
of principle. It's resorts like these that ruin
    our reefs and fish.

There is much conflict surrounding the building of
this resort on the island...the construction ruined
many of the reefs on that part of the island. The
hotel also rents out boats to any moron who wants one whether they are experienced or not. What this
means is that a boat with 2 people could use the
anchor sites (assuming their careful enough to use
the buoys) rather than co-ordinate with the existing
hotel. If you experienced Bonaire then you know what I'm talking about. There is never a search for
a location by the boats...you know when your going
and where....the hotels have arranged this so you
don't end up with more than 1 boat in a location
    at one time...it's fabulous.

The island is peaceful and the islanders are super
    friendly...the food is above average.

If you couldn't tell by my note, I'm a scuba diver
and rather upset with the circumstances surrounding
how the Harbour was built....careless owners who
saw $$$ instead of the fabulous reefs that compare
to none....if you get caught wearing gloves on the
dives (other than wreck) you get kicked off the boat. They believe that you should be careful enough not to touch the reef. If you don't wear
gloves and and touch the reef, you may learn to
get more experience in your diving so you don't do
it again! The operation Bonaire has with its
diving compares to no other....it's a divers dream!
Accomodations such as Sand Dollar Condominiums is
upscale and provide everything you could want.

Why anyone would go to Bonaire and need to stay
at a place like Harbour Village is boggling in my
mind. The island has no shopping malls and no
bargains in jewelery etc. It is truely a water lovers location.

Again, I don't begrudge any one who would like to
stay at such a fine resort but the circumstances
behind how it was built is frightening...there is
information on the internet surrounding this under
Bonaire...there was an actual petition that went
on about 1 1/2 years ago on the itnernet also.

My sister and brother-in-law used to own a townhouse at the sand dollar, and i agree it is absolutly wonderful!!! the green parrot rest. serves excellent ''american food",and the couple that runs it are great!! rent a car and spend a day driving around the island. make sure to visit the pink beach.the salt marshes(where hundreds of flamingos nest),and also the national park at the other end of the island...it is absolutely gorgeous!! loc bay is fun on sundays,as many locals spend the entire day partying to local music and good food.i will say that it is very laid back and quiet...my wife and i dont dive but the snorkeling was beautiful. there is some shopping "downtown", but is limited to small, but interesting shops.my suggestion is that if you want to get away from it all,and want to come back thoroughly relaxed, give bonaire a try!!!
