where to go in June, relatively inexpensive?
My husband and I would like to go on a last-minute trip next month. How risky is going during hurricane season? Are there some islands that are better for avoiding that (Aruba)? We'd like nice beaches, a setting that's not too built-up or resort-y--if possible, we prefer a more natural environment. We want to avoid all-inclusives and Sandals-type places but keep prices down (not too much over $100/night for hotel). Any recommendations?

June, while the beginning of hurricane season, is not a particularily active time as far as major storms are concerned so don't let that be an issue when choosing your island. The hardest thing you will encounter is finding accomodations in your price range. For starters try Cinnamon Bay Camp Grounds on St. John (USVI'S). Another destination that is popular with eco-tourists is Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic). Dominica is not too built up and has a wide range of moderately priced accomodations.

While you can never know, hurricanes are relatively rare in June. (We've already had one named Atlantic storm, so that may mean a busier hurricane season this year or not.)
But you can certainly set you sights higher than a campground. The Caribbean is filled with lovely small inns, even on more expensive islands like Anguilla, and June is definitely the low season, when prices are at their lowest.
While Dominica is a lovely island, the extra cost and effort to get there can wipe out any savings you might see on accommodations, though this depends on where you live.
I'd consider you take a look at several islands. St. Croix has many small inns with prices around $100--$150 per night. St. Maarten/St. Martin also has several smaller inns in that range. If you are willing to stretch your budget, Ku Resort in Anguilla costs less than $200 a night and has good packages for the summer (and these units all have kitchens); the Arawak Beach Inn has a rate of $125 a night ($145 for a room with a kitchen ... but these rates do NOT include a/c, for which you pay extra).
On Barbados, look for hotels in the St. Lawrence Gap area; many of these are modest and inexpensive. One of our favorites, Peach & Quiet, though not on a beach and requiring you to rent a car, charges just about $100 a night.
There are also a few modest hotels in St. Lucia in the Rodney Bay area, though most aren't on a beach.
There are several small inns in Negril (many highly favored by Fodorites on these boards) that cost between $100 and $200 a night in the summer.
If you set your budget at around $100 to $200 per night and budget for a car since you may not be able to stay on the beach for that price, you can find something pretty decent (perhaps with cooking facilities) for your price.

Sorry, I just realized that Peach and Quiet is already closed for the summer. But there are some other options on Barbados in the St. Lawrence Gap area, and you can get Divi Heritage (all units with kitchens) in Holetown for $112 a night.

We just returned from Playa del Carmen, MX and sat next to a couple who stayed at the Playa Maya in an oceanfront room for $120 a night. Playa is a great town with tons of amazing restaurants that are so reasonable. It's clean, cute and safe. It has a european village feel. There is a starbucks and Haagan Daz, but everything else is private. You can get direct flights from many US cities to Cancun too. It's about a 45 minute drive to Playa. We used USA transfers for $95 round trip private.
