what isTobago like now?

I have been to Tobago twice.
Once in 1975, and we stayed at a fancy British golf hotel, not really my style.
My second trip was with my husband in 1984, and we spent a month there in February,.
We rented a house from a German man named Wolfgang Koneig.
The house was outside of Charlottesville, about a 1/2-1 mile walk up a path through the forest. The house was literally the last one on the island!
Our caretaker was a gentleman named Julian who lived below in the village.
There was also a complex in the village that had cabins for rent.
It was run by a woman named Pat and her husband. They were British, I think.
Does anyone have any info about that area now?
Is Tobago totally touristy since I was last there 16yrs ago?
I would love to here about it.
Thank you,
Nancy in Vermont

I was there about a month ago. The southern end of the island near the airport is quite "touristy", with alot of small hotels and apartments, and few larger resorts. However, it's far from being built up like the tourist areas of Jamaica, Cancun or San Juan. The north end near Charlotteville is probably like you remember it -- very little tourism. I saw a few small guest houses right in town, and Man O' War Bay Cottages is just south of town. The Forest Reserve covers much of the northern half of the island, so there is very little development there. Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks Brian,
Pretty tardy in getting back to my own message.
Have no plans to go again anytime soon.
It was just curiosity since my trips there were 25 yrs. and 15 yrs. ago.
Glad to hear the Man o' War is still there , I remember we were allowed to shop in Pat's tiny little store for food items.
Dutch butter and milk in a box with Arabic writing on it!
Great place, Tobago.

Stayed at Mt. Irvine Golf resort for a few days in early July. Hotel/grounds were in godd condition, but food was only average. Lunch was best value. Found EXCELLENT little restaurant past Rex hotel on Plymouth road. AMADEUS had great entrees and desserts at MODEST prices. Run by a proprietor couple in small house on the hill above the road.

hi, we will be going to trinidad & tobago with my husbands brother (21yrs) in late October 2000. We were planning to spend a couple of days on each island. Do you recommend taking the ferry between the islands (or will the water be too rough at that time of year?). Also which island do you recommend for the longer stay? As far as things to do, we would like to do some sight seeing (could be nature type things or otherwise), would like to go fishing and snorkelling but we don't want things to be too touristy. Any recommendations???

Also not sure where to stay. Would like somewhere casual and not too expensive (Canadian Dollars don't go as far these days)...Also with good food. (my husband added that one)..

Thanks mel

The last 2 times I went to Tobago, I stayed at Belleviste Apartments in Crown Point near the airport. The accommodations are simple yet functional and convenient. An efficiency unit with a full kitchen, dining area, sleeping area, bathroom and in-room safe costs around US$70, plus 10% tax. There is no service charge, but I leave something for the cleaning staff. One- and two-bedroom apartments are also available. I believe you can find cheaper accommodations in the same area. If you really want to get away from it all, there are some inexpensive places in Charlotteville, at the northern end of the island. I heard some of these go for around US$25 a night. Belleviste is not directly on the beach, but each unit has a private patio or balcony with a sea view, and access to the facilities and restaurant at the Sandy Point Beach Club, just through the gate by the pool. Belleviste does not have a restaurant. There are grocery stores in the area to supply the kitchen. I'm not sure what you had in mind as far as accommodations, but this arrangement suited me fine since I spent very little time at the apartment.

Most activities in Tobago are nature-oriented: diving, snorkelling and hiking. I wasn't too impressed with the snorkelling around Buccoo Bay. The coral wasn't in good shape and there weren't many fish. Hiking in the rainforest and in area around Charlotteville was great.

As for overall costs, I found prices in Tobago very reasonable compared with other islands. The most expensive part was the airfare (from Chicago). In fact, airfare accounted for half my total cost. This even included a rental car for the entire week (about US$230 a week).

If you want to travel between Trinidad and Tobago and are concerned about rough seas, you may want to consider flying. Both BWIA and Air Caribbean have numerous flights every day between the islands. The flight time is less than 20 minutes. I'm not sure of the cost since I didn't go to Trinidad.

You can e-mail me if you'd like more details.

Have stayed at Sandy Point near the airport. I was older place with small beach and very average food. The room price was moderate and the rooms. alhough inexpensively furnished, had a kitchenette. Also compare the Crown Point hotel which is larger although older style but up high overlooking a larger beach. It too is moderate price for moderate quality. I also heartilty recommend a restaurant on a small hill past the Rex hotel called Amadeus. Entress about US$10-12 and excellent desserts. Enjoy
