Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Turks & Caicos are not technically in the Caribbean. They are in the Atlantic. This is only an issue during the winter, when the water and air temps aren't always tropically warm.
However, as you can see, there are many islands that are about 4 hours from NYC. As long as you are going to a destination in the greater Antilles or one of the islands north of Barbados, the travel time isn't that different so that it matters much.
More relevant is that if you went to St. Lucia, for example, there would be an additional hour-plus drive to get to most resorts after landing.

Doug, I know Bermuda is not technically in the caribbean, but it is a beautiful paradise and close enough to NYC to make it a worthwhile trip!
I forgot about the Bahamas and TC.
I know they are warmer than Bermuda, but still may be somewhat cool in Jan/Feb. Probably would be great in March!

it's not the air temp in t&c that's the problem - it's the water temp. that couple of degrees cooler makes a big difference when you plan to spend hours per day snorkeling or doing other water activities. it can be a bit windy as well.
bahamas can be as low as 70's. bermuda 60's. not cold like here in maine. (-10 tomorrow) but not beach sitting/swimming weather. bahamas water even cooler than t&c.
may through dec are wonderful and of course we don't know when op plans to travel or even why she asked.
